Poll question: Is Farmers Branch, TX, bigoted or justified?
This is the town that just passed a law criminalizing the renting of apartments to undocumented people.

Here's a link to DU thread about this.

Here's a link to the city's home page ...... just welcoming people to live there.

1. I don't see that this is a racist issue...
Edited on Mon May-14-07 10:37 AM by FreedomsTeeth
This isn't targeted at Mexicans, it's targeted at anyone who's in our country illegally. I think it's well justified. People seem to think the only people who are here illegally are hard-working single-moms, but many of them are drug dealers and terrorists. There's a reason we have laws, just because a certain demographic of people break them does not mean that the laws are racist.

My grantparents were immigrants... they did it the legal way... personally I'm offended that people cut in front of line and trespass illegally here. I am not bigoted, I just want they to obey the law.

3. "........ but many of them are drug dealers and terrorists."
Is that a statistical fact or just hyperbole?

How many, in particular, are terrorists?

Who are apparently taking advantage of our weak borders to come into our country through Mexico. It only takes one with a suitcase nuke.

And I think people who are against this are also looking at this wrong: this is not just about preventing where illegal immigrants can live. This is also about protecting the rest of an apartment complex / neighborhood from a terrorist who wants to set up a cell and/or use their apartment as a soft-target.

10. Nice talking points
Suitcase nuke? I have never seen any proof of a suitcase nuke ever even existing.

It's fearmongering, plain and simple. Look out, they're going to get you!

It only takes one. So we should torture 'em all to make sure we can catch that one.

Sheesh.

nice username, BTW.

11. They're here illegally, and at least some of them commit more crimes...
Edited on Mon May-14-07 11:16 AM by FreedomsTeeth
I fail to see whether or not they have a suitcase nuke relevant. They're breaking the law just by being here, without getting the proper paperwork and waiting in line like my grandparents had to, and everyone else who wants to come here. On top of that, many of them commit worse crimes once they're here... or do you think all these drugs got here by accident?

The OK bombings killed 168 people, and was done with fertilizer and diesel... I think there's justification to be concerned about lawbreakers in our country.

15. You're the one
Who accused the illegal migrant workers of letting the "terrorists" in with them and the terrorists have the mythical "suitcase nukes"

Do you know anything about physics? There ARE NO SUITCASE NUKES. Yet, you use that as your arguement in whether or not a law in Texas is racist.

Now you just posted something about how you have to have an assault weapon to protect yourself from the governement. Yeah, right. Are you sure you're at the right website?

Ignore.

16. Well said
it has absolutely nothing to do withn race IMHO

Although I find it highly likely that a large portion of the people supporting it do so because of racial issues.

14. I know much of the city. I know many of the people.
I know much of the city. I know many of the people. It has nothing to do with the Rule of Law. It has nothing to do with empowering a community.

It's bigotry in this particular instance-- lily white DINK's who are afraid their property values will go down if more non-lily white move in. That was the encoded message heard by everyone who listened to the arguments as this got underway some months back.

(I'm not saying that this particular bit of "code enforcement" is bigotry in any of the other communities it's happened in, only in this case.)

Mass bigotry is still bigotry. It is one reason why we (used to) have a Supreme Court.

the mayor has the cops dump homeless people on the other side of the city limits.

23. You know the will of the people in the South was segregation.
The constitution protects us from the tyranny of the masses. If I were in that town they would not tell me who I can and cannot rent to.

This law is xenophobic not doubt about it.
