Queen Elizabeth succeeds where Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and Pelosi have all failed
Washington diary: Royal jitters
By Matt Frei, BBC News, Washington

I have seen George Bush fumble for grammar, cringe in front of the cameras and shrug off insults from world leaders.

I have seen him joust gamely with opponents and stare down enemies with a cold eye.

But I have never, ever seen the commander-in-chief of the mightiest nation on earth look utterly terrified.

This week an elderly lady, who is at least a head smaller than the president and who, by all accounts, has never harmed a fly, achieved - unwittingly - what Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and Nancy Pelosi have all tried and failed to do: reduce George Walker Bush to a quivering mass, make his lower lip tremble and - I promise you I saw it with my own eyes - make him blush to the roots of his Texan rind.

Excuse me for a moment...

Sorry, had to get that out of my system. The article continues at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6637429.stm

2. He's afraid of a real mother, one who holds youngsters accountable
And he might worry she's gonna smack him with what he probably thinks are flower-pots she wears on her head ;)

4. A real mother who holds youngsters accountable? Queen Elizabeth II?
While not criminal like Barbara and her brood, the Royal Family is about as dysfunctional as they get.

8. What's dysfunctional about the Windsor kids? They've gotten divorced and re-married?
I've known folks that have worked with Chuck, Anne and Andy and everyone says they're terrific, completely unpretentious folks.

Not to mention that Chuck and Andrew - and their parents - served their country in the military.

9. Thank you, Mookie
Comparing bush criminal-thug kids to the Windsors, who do understand that privilege carries responsibility, was pretty odd ;)

10. A simple Google search of "House of Windsor dysfunctional" will
answer your question and keep you reading for days.

Yeah, they served their country in the military. Geoffry Dahmer served ours in the military, as did Timothy McVeigh. Your point?

Just because our leadership is corrupt, there's no reason to start tugging at the forelock when the British royal family pops in for a visit.

11. If you had read English history, you'd know that...

it is the royal family that has been a consistent advocate for the welfare of low income and working class Britons.

Hell, when QEII was in DC in 1991, she went to Southeast DC. Mandela didn't. When there were riots in London's East End in the late 80s, Charles was there the next day to talk to the people who lived there.

And Liz was one of the few who would stand up to Margaret Thatcher.

I'm not saying I generically support monarchies, but the British royal family has rarely missed an opportunity to do their bit.

12. Having probably read more English history than most, I am well
aware the positive as well as negative traits of the British royal family.

Nevertheless, dysfunctional families have been a hallmark for the rulers of the United Kingdom for generations, from William the Conqueror up to and including the House of Windsor.

The family antics of the four Georges were notorious. William IV would hardly have won any prizes for family values. And the relationships between Victoria and Edward VII or George V and Edward VIII, the present queen's uncle, plumbed the depths of dysfunctionality.

No matter whatever virtues they may embody, the current crop of royals, following in an age-old tradition, is less than inspiring when it comes to family values.

13. The current crop of royals are probably the least dysfunctional of the lot.
By all accounts they're decent human beings.

Yes, they need to get the Duchess of this and the Duke of that off the dole...

14. Well at least the Prince of Wales did marry his whore. I guess that's
progress of a sort. And he does make a contribution on environmental issues.

16. She was, and was so in the best historical tradition, complete with a willing
husband who felt honored by his wife's relationship with the Prince of Wales and used it to advance his social and financial position. If you find title offensive, you have a lot to learn about English history.

As for what the relationship made Charles, historically a royal male has never suffered any social stigma for such behavior in England, unfair but a fact. As an American citizen, I knew such behavior had been common at the start of the Twentieth Century, but was surprised Charles had continued the practice.

I considered his treatment of the Princess of Wales despicable; but then I had never seen Charles nor his dysfunctional family as role models for family values, so I guess my shock was minimal, if not my disdain.

6. This is so true.
"In Virginia, where the rich earth moans with the memories of the civil war, the war of independence and the lives of the founding fathers, every brick and beam dating back a hundred years or more is festooned with a plaque."

ROFLMAO.....I've often thought that Va is the historical marker capitol of the world.

Edited on Wed May-09-07 08:35 AM by mahatmakanejeeves
If there's anything that I consider totally worthless, it has to be the royal family. The best thing this country ever did was to give them the bum's rush over 200 years ago. Good riddance.

My idea of hell is a place where I'd have to choose who I'd rather have running a country, * or the royal family.
