Limbaugh Plays "Barack The Magic Negro" on His Show
Posted on April 24, 2007, Printed on April 26, 2007
http://www.alternet.org/story/50998/

by Storm Bear from Daily Kos:

This is a head-shaker. Imus gets canned for calling some college women basketball players "nappy-headed hos" and yet Rush Limbaugh plays "Barack The Magic Negro" on his show and he is still on the air?

How is that even possible?

To hear the song yourself, watch video right ...

It is a parody by Paul Shanklin impersonating Al Sharpton and based on the Peter, Paul, and Mary hit song "Puff, the Magic Dragon". I am really at a loss for words. I heard it for the first time yesterday on the radio and was sickened.

Again, how is this man on the air?

12. I think some of it must be about who it was that Imus made his
remarks about. Politicians, TV celebrities, movies stars, etc. are public figures who have put themselves in the limelight and can expect a certain amount of ridicule and bad press, whether it is deserved or not. Imus, OTOH, levelled his remarks toward a team of young athletes who had not tried to call attention to themselves as individuals, but as representatives of their school. Most people know girls of that age and could relate to what these young women must have felt.

33. I think so. Basically, you can't make fun of "vulnerable" people.
We have an idea of the relative power (or lack thereof) between two parties, and we generally know when someone powerful crosses the line and attacks someone much more vulnerable than themselves.

he wants to.

Perhaps they will say Obama is a public figure and he only said the word Negro.

I'm in no way excusing this Scumbag ~ watch it breeze by.

He is surely testing the waters to see if that will swim.

It did so he,will say something worse.

:puke:

Knowing Sen. Obama, it will be addressed smoothly.

It would not be pretty if I was able to give Rush my thoughts! :puke:

13. stupid vile shit but not in the same league.
Obama is a public figure, a politician running for office, and as such he is expected to be the target of vile attacks. The Rutgers basketball team, while also public figures, were not expected to be the target of vile attacks.

The use of the term "negro" is not, in and of itself, offensive. The use of the term "nappy headed ho" is, in and of itself, offensive.

I dislike the fat stupid drug addict as least as much as I dislike imus, but this offense of his simply does not rise to the level of the nappy incident.

48. Thank you...this is so mild Limpballs
It really isn't far off from liberal bits about Repuke politicians who as you put it are public people, whereas the Rutgers team were completely berated by Imus as "its no big deal they lost, they aren't nothing but a bunch of ho's" not only did he insult them, but the true context was that they're tattoos and nappy hair dictates wether they were worthy of winning. Besides the fact that you don't kick someone when he/she's down its low!

Now thats not to say the Rush shouldn't be black-balled for something far worse which I can't think of at this very moment..... but not for this.... this is a cheap bit.

Michael Savage, well he recently made comments regarding the valor of VT victims and survivors, now THAT was unconscionable.....

14. Basically, they are seeing how far they can go
"Negro" is not considered a racial slur, and I think using the tune to "Puff the Magic Dragon" comes under the cover of satire.

It is just another example of Rush's attitude towards minorities--he just knows how far he can go and stay within the law.

15. Consider the MSM is
under the same umbrella as this presidency...The mission of the MSM is to sell the message of the GOP....that's how they keep their jobs.

They will claim that Obama is a Presidential Candidate which means he is open fodder. To address the issue only gives it more traction.

Sometime we have to take a punch.

The difference is who the target is.............

25. a double standard
Does anyone here listen to this man? If no then that means none of you were listening and did not have the opportunity to be offended. You do not listen because you know whatever he says is going to upset you. We are the last group that should call the NAACP to complain. Let the people who should call should be the fans who were listening and were offended.

How would you feel if ignorant people that didn't watch the Daily Show got it cancelled?

How we feel don't mean jack. If we can get him off the air through any legal means, good for us.

The only reason he is even on the air at all is because he has enough listeners that sponsors want to reach. We should boycott his sponsors.

(edit: removed pdf poster due to age/possible inaccuracies.)

And here is supposed to be a partial list of sponsors:
(edit for a more current list):

Barnes & Noble
Oreck Vacuum Cleaners
Quicken Loans
eHarmony
Lumber Liquidators
Select Comfort Corp. Blue-Emu
Pfizer, Inc.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/4/24/121022/830

We might have to actually listen to find out who the local sponsors are. Yeck.

26. Well, this might be too deep for ol' Rush
"Puff the Magic Dragon" was inspired by Ogden Nash's ode "The Tale of Custard the Dragon." In a nutshell, Custard is dubbed coward by his owner Belinda and the other pets, who are self acclaimed bravehearts all. When danger actually threatens, Custard saves them all while everyone else is scurrying for cover. Seems to me Belinda et al are stereotypical pukes like Rush -- all talk and no action.

As soon as is legislatively possible, we need to get the Fairness Doctrine reinstalled. Let them go back to dropping KKK pamphlets in high school parking lots during class to disseminate their vile message of hate (happened at my NC high school 20 years ago!)

A little equal time will show anyone who's not a sheet-wearing fascist "you know, these sheet-wearing fascists are really kinda assholes compared to these people that are advocating peace and adult-level communication and understanding. 'WWJD', indeed?"

34. The only explanation I can figure out is that the audience expectation
is different. Imus could have his own show, he got kicked out of sports, right? So did Rushbot. So you can't do that with a general, sports audience, but you can with your own specialized, racist audience. The Dittoheads won't complain. Anyone wanting Rush fired is obviously not one of his sheep.

43. Here's why. Imus pissed off neo-cons with his anti-Bush/anti-Iraq war talk.
Imus also ticked off liberals with some racist talk.

He lost support with both groups. The corporate owners wanted a reason to get rid of him anyway for his anti-Bush talk. He's gone.

Limbaugh has full support of the neo-cons and conservatives. They like his racist talk. They like his pro-Bush talk.
Limbaugh has support from Republicans and not Democrats. The corporate owners want a reason to keep him and this is what they state as their excuse. He stays, for a while.

46. Well, I expressed that badly. For me, he's been "over the line"
since the first time I heard him.

What I meant, and didn't articulate, was that someday there'll be an accountability moment like happened to Imus. Imus too had been "over the line" many times, for many years in fact. But it all caught up with him. There'll be a similar moment for Limbaugh -- UNLESS his addiction gets to him first. I don't care how he goes out, just so he goes.

I expected much more before I actually herd "Barack the Magic Negro", frankly it was so mild for Limbaugh... he has done FAR WORSE.... it has a slight racist tinge, but the content rivals any bit from Stephanie Miller or Randi Rhodes..... lets be honest... their humor could leave a bad taste in any conservative's mouth.... don't get me wrong, I love the bits but Limbaugh's bit is inocuous.

Now Michael Savage's comment about VT victims was really worthy of an Imus-like freeze out sponsor campaign...

49. Imus was pulled because of sponsor skittishness. For Dito Head sponsors know what they are getting.
Most of Rush's listeners are overtly racist thus advertisers don't worry about offending any of those listeners and losing sales.

The reality is that the game is about one thing alone: corporate sponsors. If Comrades were listening to Stalin and happy with it corporations would sponsor it. If Hitler Youth were listening and were happy with the radio program corporations would sponsor it. If not, they withdraw their support and the guy goes off the air whether he is talking about the inferiority of the "negro race" or the color of puppies.
