Al Gore on Swedish television
On March 31, which was Al Gore's birthday, Al did an interview on Swedish television. The woman hosting the program did the introduction in Swedish, but then interviewed Al in English. She wished him a happy birthday, and Al smiled, responding, "You've done your research!"

They discussed the serious injury of Al Gore's 6 year old son that occurred almost 20 years ago (which he also discusses in An Inconvenient Truth) which led him to reevaluate his life. Al said that in the 30 days by his son's bedside he learned something about the "possibility of losing something very precious". He was talking about both to his family (which he decided needed to be put first on his calender before everything else) and our planet.

As they began to discuss the environmental crisis, Stina pointed out that a report was recently presented at the U.N. conference, which had Sweden at the top and the United States and Kazakhstan at the bottom, in efforts concerning climate change. Al laughed and offered his congratulations.

She asked him about running for president, and if he might be able to accomplish more with regard to the global warming issue if he were president. (She also asked her audience if he should run again, and they applauded and shouted "Yes!")

Al Gore: “I don’t have any plans to be a candidate for president again. I haven’t completely ruled out going back into politics at some point in my life. But the reason I don’t ever expect to be a candidate again is partrly because I’ve fallen out of love with politics, and I have less patience for some of the aspects of the politicsl system. But also because the way the political dialog is conducted over these 30 second TV commercials now, there is less of a chance to deal in depth with the biggest crisis that we have to face–this climate crisis.”

1. The Sad Thing Is He's Exactly Right
He doesn't want to enter politics again, because politics SUCKS. He can't stand the Spin, the Sound Bytes, the $$$$$$$$$$$$$ Raising, the constant campaigning, etc.

The guy has too much character and intelligence, and he knows that he will be smeared, and his mission degraded, if he were to run again.

These are the very reasons that Al Gore is he BEST person for the job of President in '08.

Yet, we're stuck with career politicians like Hillary Clinton. Who live each day as if it were a campaign. Or we have Obama, who is intent on riding his current stardom in hopes of winning the Presidency.

Yet, someone who is above it all....who is beyond modest, and probably has the capability to help with all the problems we'll be facing when King george leaves office.....is unable to stand the BS that comes along with the political campaign, and so we are the ones who lose.

I pray that Mr. Gore's plans change between now and September. I see bad prospects for the Democrats if Clinton or Obama win the nomination. It's almost like we want to give the repubs a shot at this, when we could wipe the floors with them if we had someone like Al Gore in the race.

4. He hasn't ruled it out and is keeping his options open
Al Gore is the best person for the job, in terms of his experience, knowledge, intelligence and judgement.

I am dreaming of a Gore-Obama ticket in 2008. But there is no hurry for Gore to enter the race.

I think Al Gore is keeping his options open right now, watching how the "pre-season" goes. I don't think he yet knows what he will do. My guess is that the chance of him entering the race is somewhere between 20% and 35%.

Gore's current line - "I have no plans to be a candidate" - tells us that right now (today) he has no plans to run. But it doesn't prevent him from changing his plans and making new plans during the coming months.

Gore is doing a great job raising public awareness about the climate crisis, with An Inconvenient Truth winning the Oscar for best documentary, and lots of media attention around the Congressional Hearing on March 21st.

Gore is getting ready to bring out his next book The Assault on Reason - to be published in May. The theme of this book - why we need better decision-making in government - is very timely (whether he runs or not).

Gore is also leading Live Earth with concerts across the globe on 7/7/07 -- all with the aim of raising awareness and pushing for action to address the climate crisis.

Depending on how things pan out, and the reaction to his book, Gore can consider his situation over the summer and announce his decision (or if you prefer - "change his mind") sometime in the fall.

It all depends on the circumstances. In September, if the race for the Dem nomination is still wide open and Hillary's campaign is in trouble, it might create the conditions for Gore to enter the race.

Unless and until Gore endorses another candidate, we have to assume that he is keeping his options open. So it is too soon for those of us who prefer Gore to switch our allegiance.

"If (Al) was going to run in the future, of course I would support him. I think he'd be a fantastic president. He already got a majority of votes of people in this country once, and so that says something."

5. Ah, the glimmer of hope lives!
Thanks for sharing this with us.

As loathe as I am for any Democrat to have this mess dumped in their lap in 2008, the nomination is Gore's for the taking and do so hope he does.
