Levin: Last Congress Didn’t Investigate Walter Reed Because ‘They Did Not Want To Embarrass’ Bush

On NBC’s Meet the Press today, Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) argued that the Senate Armed Services Committee did not conduct oversight of the treatment at military facilities in recent years because “they did not want to embarrass the President.” As the new chairman of the committee, Levin said he will be visiting Walter Reed this week and holding a hearing on March 6.

Levin decried the deplorable conditions at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. “Where we need a surge is not in Iraq. We need a surge of concern for our troops, for the veterans, for the injured, for the wounded, for the families of those who have lost loved ones. That’s the surge of concern and that’s the surge that we need,” Levin said. Watch it:

2. I don't know if you saw it
The Washington post reporter who broke the story said "We are getting calls from all over the country about VA's and Military Hospials" sounds like this is not over with

4. Why didn't the democrats raise the issue?
That explains why the committee didn't conduct oversight.

It does NOT explain why the DEMOCRATS didn't get their asses in the public spotlight and raise it as an issue again and again and again, and ask reporters to cover it.

8. How do you know they (Dems) didn't ask reporters to cover it ? -
perhaps over and over again. But the press did not bother because they were fearful of losing position in the WH press room?

How do you know that Dana didn't get her tip from a Dem hill staffer or member of congress? Do you think it is completely random that it is coming out now right after the Dems took the House and the Senate? The Washington Post article gave the Dems a good setup to call for hearings. Don't you think the article was a good way to jump start the investigation by the Senate and keep it from moving to page 13. Hearings without Dana's article would be completely ignored by the msm. Now - it is guaranteed to be breathlessly covered.

13. Can you show me where they made speeches about it?
Can you show me where they stood on the floor of the senate and said "Here is a photo of how our injured vets live at Walter Reed?"

Can you show me where they even ATTEMPTED to make this an issue?

5. Scale back the "power" of the Executive
to write law and even influence. More than any other single thing, that seems the most out of whack with the Constitution's original intent.

9. For the Dems, this excuse is inexcusable imo.I realize they were
in the minority, but they could have bitched long and loud about the substandard facilities. If they were aware of them, their inaction and silence makes them just as guilty of trying to protect dimson, and that's really disgusting.

11. Carl Levin has been throwing plenty of punches lately....
I think his frustration with the last six years and the inability to do oversight because of the Fristian fraud Senate is just oozing out now that he can do something about it. Swing away, Carl. Swing away.
