Poll question: Between these two Democrats, Gore or Hillary, who do you prefer to run?
I'm doing this poll only at the request of another poster who asked someone to poll this question from another thread.

I already know what the outcome will be. It's just a matter of how much.

38. I have said that but I would not vote for Holy Joe and I did not
vote for George Wallace when he was the Independent candidate. I am trying to warn people that for many years I have not seen a third party candidate who at the last moment had enough strength to win. I have seen good people defeated because of allegiance to third party candidates even when it was clear they would not win. WHEN I see a progressive candidate strong enough to win I will consider not voting D. However, I see no such candidate. Between D & R I will never vote for R and voting for a third party candidate who cannot win is often a vote for R. I have been watching politics since FDR and I have not seen any other party that even begins to challenge the pugs. Until there is I repeat I will continue to vote D. I cannot afford to play politics with the programs that keep my disabled child alive.

Huh? Saying she's sorry is going to wipe away what she did? That's funny.

I suppose because Kerry and Edwards said their sorry, now they're absolved of all their sins. Personally they would have been better off just eating crow instead of going on talk shows spilling their guts that they made a mistake, just because it's politically ok to do so now.

55. Be interesting for her to tell us what went wrong "that day", drunk or not.
You imply i forgive Kerry and Edwards. Wrong. They and HRC all fail the test. On "that day" drunk or not, they choose to support the worst decision in the last (maybe forever). Hundreds of thousands of deaths and we ain't done yet. Maybe WW III. And why did they? They were fooled by some mysterious intelligence that none of us has seen or heard about? No way. Instead of voting against the neocon war machine, they choose, emphasize "choose", to do the political thing and not look unpatriotic. If there is anything worse than GWB and the neocon's lying our way into war, it's the Democrats support. They knew better, they were not fooled. They were supposed to help us against tyranny and they failed. Irregardless of public opinion they were supposed to do the right thing. That's what a representative government is about. How can anyone forgive them.

I think Gore has done a lot since winning the presidency, and having it stolen from him.
A lot towards global warming, he personally rescued multiple patients from a New Orleans hospital,
He's done a lot of things that already make me wish the Supreme Court had butted out.

Clinton has voted on the flag burning amendment, and uh.....help me out here.

20. No she didn't
She never voted on any flag burning amendment. She co-sponsored legislation in June of 2005 to outlaw desecration to the American flag in an attempt to AVOID any changes to the Constitution with such a law. Neoconservatives at the time were pushing for an amendment, and Hillary opposed any such amendment, opting for legislation instead of an amendment.

25. thanks for the correction: flag burning legislation, not an amendment
but I fail to see much difference, myself.

she outlawed flag burning to avoid outlawing flag burning.

MY POINT is that with an illegal war, torture, etc, flag burning was a waste of time and pandering to the right wing, whether it was an amendment or simply "legislation"

26. During the same time frame, she also did a lot on behalf of women, children, education
and no one thought it was a waste of time on those issues, but it doesn't get much mention here. On the flag thing, the flag always comes more to light in periods of war. Maybe she had motives politically, maybe she just loves the flag, maybe she's trying to be more centrist with the flag thing and find common ground for both sides. Who knows. At least she did her best to prevent it from becoming an amendment.

it doesn't necessarily mean that some of those voters don't ALSO like Hillary. Some of them might just prefer Gore over her, since both these Democrats are deeply rooted in the DLC. Then again, this is DU where Hillary is damned if she does and damned if she doesn't.

As far as your question about the poll you saw on TV where Hillary does so well, that's because the sentiments on DU do not represent what goes on out there in mainstream Democratic America.

Plus, to my knowledge, many of the Hillary supporters sleep in on Sundays and haven't seen this poll yet. ;)

The DLC is like anything else. There's some good people in it and some idiots. It isn't perfect but it isn't all bad either, like what some people try and make of it. Seems like around here everything is either black or white with no shades of gray in between.

34. As one who voted for Gore
I just want to add that while I can enthusiastically support Al Gore if he becomes our nominee, this poll is more indicitive of Hillary Clinton's lack of popularity than it is of Al Gore's popularity here (and yes I know that Al Gore IS quite popular here). By that I mean that there are several Democrats that one could name to substitute for Al Gore in a head to head poll vs Hillary Clinton on Democratic Unerground, and the results would be very very similar to the results of this poll. People would both be voting for another Democrat and against supporting Hillary Clinton for the nomination, given any kind of good choice in the matter.

51. Sen. Clinton
My personal preference is for Gore.

However, I think it is more important for Sen. Clinton to run. We need to see a viable woman candidate run for President. It is an embarrassment that we only elect men. (And for the most part white, northern european, Protestants.) I want other top-tier women politicians to run in the future. More than that, I want young girls to see a woman making a strong showing, or better yet, become President.

53. It's gotta be Gore !!
I see everything that is going on right now as creating a "Perfect Storm" for Al Gore.

Hillary has been forced to show her hand a full 12 months before the start of the primaries!!

This means people have a full 12 months to ask Hillary about her position on Iraq, and why has she been so supportive of the illegitimate (p)Resident of the Whitehouse these past 5 years ....

People also have time to get tired of Hillary's campaign. What we might call "Hillary fatigue".

The field is getting very crowded and it will be tough for candidates to gain traction.

I like and respect both Obama and (especially) Edwards. But the fact is they are both relatively inexperienced and unqualified if you compare them to Al Gore. Obama has been 2 years in the Senate and Edwards was 6 years (but the last 2 of those he was concentrating on the 2004 campaign).

I respect the fact that Edwards has come clean about the situation in Iraq, and has admitted he was wrong to vote for the IWR. But I respect much MORE the fact that Gore spoke out agains the Bu$h-Cheney-Rumsfeld policy on Iraq from the beginning - in speeches going back to 2002 - insisting on giving the UN inspectors more time to carry out their mission and maintaining a broad international consensus.

There is no hurry for Gore to enter the race for 2008. He is doing a great job raising public awareness about the climate crisis (speaking to more than 12000 people in Boise today!). He is also busy working on his next book "The Assault on Reason" - to be published in May (see article below).

Depending on how things pan out, and the reaction to his forthcoming book, Gore can consider his situation over the summer and announce his decision sometime in the fall.

Unless and until Gore endorses another candidate, we have to assume that he is keeping his options open. So it is too soon for those of us who prefer Gore to switch our allegiance.

The Washington Post -- Sunday, September 17, 2006

Gore's 2008 Plans May Become Clearer After Release of Book

By John F. Harris and Shailagh Murray

Although saying he has no plans to run for president in 2008, former vice president Al Gore has nonetheless left the door ever so slightly ajar. It's a good bet that door will swing open a good bit wider come next May.

That is when Gore is scheduled to publish his next book. With no fanfare, he signed a few weeks ago with Penguin Press to write "The Assault on Reason."

As described by editor Scott Moyers, the book is a meditation on how "the public arena has grown more hostile to reason," and how solving problems such as global warming is impeded by a political culture with a pervasive "unwillingness to let facts drive decisions."

While that may sound abstract, both the subject matter and the timing of the release have an unmistakable subtext. In 2004, Gore cheered liberals when he lashed at President Bush for allegedly falling captive to right-wing special interests and taking flight from "fact-based analysis." If the book strikes a chord, it will produce new momentum for Gore to make another bid for the White House, presumably fueled in large part by anti-Iraq-war Democrats.
