Poll question: Restoring the Fairness Doctrine: For or Against?
Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 05:22 AM by Cascadian
Bernie Sanders and Dennis Kucinich are calling for a return to the Fairness Doctrine to the media. Ever since it had been swept away thanks to the Reagan Administration some 20 years ago, we have seen a few companies in control of the mainstream media. A return to the Fairness Doctrine would restore a truly "fair and balanced" media. The removal of the Fairness Doctrine brought Clear Channel and Rush Limbaugh thrust upon our lives. I am sure the vast majority of DUers want the Fairness Doctrine returned however, I have no doubt there are some of us that have no problem with the Doctrine not returning. I don't know why but.....

2. I don't know...

When Clinton was in office, we had an opportunity to restore the Fairness Doctrine. He could have done it before Gingrich and Co. came into power in '94. I think there are some Democrats who have no trouble with not having the Doctrine. Just my take anyways.

3. I voted for it but
It comes down to private vs public. We need to make sure that "media news" remains part of the commons. We need to take it back from private hands and restore information to the people. The more we let government give away our stuff to private business the less we can say about it. The less we will even know about it. The people need information to make good decisions. We must separate government from business and business from the news of the day.

4. I don't want Freepers on DU, don't bring it back!
People don't seem to understand that it wouldn't be just radio impacted, it would have to include all media outlets. This include the internet. DU would have to allow freepers!

5. Tom sounded a little skeptical about bringing it back
He was saying that it actually stifled debate. He said some stations would air gardening programs so they wouldn't have to deal with equal time.
