What Is Joe, Really?Joe Lieberman is an independent like I'm an astronaut.
Oh, I suppose I could walk around telling everyone, "Hi, I'm Bill Hillsman, and I'm an astronaut." But people would take one look at me and know it's not true. Recently the "Connecticut for Lieberman" campaign blog found some incongruity in the fact that my company works for a number of political independents - but rather than working for Joe, we are working for Ned Lamont.
Talking about consultants is merely another way for Joe to direct attention away from his record in the Senate. But setting that aside, I will paraphrase a former U.S. senator and vice presidential candidate of greater fortitude than Joe Lieberman when I say, "I know real political independents, and you, Senator, are no independent."
Real political independents are people of courage, like Sen. Jim Jeffords of Vermont, who left the majority Republican Party when he felt the party's policies had become too extreme for him or the people he represented. Or Russ Potts, who did the same thing when he ran for governor of Virginia in 2005.
Or Big Dig whistleblower and gubernatorial candidate Christy Mihos in Massachusetts, who did the same thing when he realized neither Democrats nor Republicans were seriously interested in changing a corrupt and incompetent state government. Or Connecticut's own Eunice Groak and Lowell Weicker when they each ran for governor.
Real political independents don't lose their party primary and suddenly convert to being an independent just to cling to their seats.
