Westville, NJ council members changing party affiliation to Democrat
Yet another instance of rats jumping from a sinking ship:

Three veteran borough council members who plan election campaigns will announce tonight that they have changed their party affiliation and have registered as Democrats.

The Democrats gain control of the six-member council for the first time in recent memory.

Council President Michael Galbraith and Councilmen Michael Ledrich and Russell Welsh approached the Gloucester County Democratic Committee about switching parties in the past six to eight weeks.

They all filled out change of party affiliation cards before registering as Democrats, said Michael Angelini, chairman of the county Democratic committee.

"We're thrilled to have them. They bring a wealth of experience, and it'll be good for the town and good for the county," he said.

Galbraith, who had been a Republican, plans to run as a Democratic mayoral candidate in the June primary.

1. I remember a few years ago when there were lots of Dems who
were switching to the GOP, so this is very welcome news and indicative of the erosion in support for the GOP these days.

4. welcome? maybe - to me it says here are more people who want
to remain in power rather than uphold whatever convictions they claimed to have had in the first place. So they'll say what they should, meet the people they should, hold their hands out to all the donors the way they are told by the party office - and then still do whatever the hell they feel like on the simple benchmark of what's going to maintain them in power the longest - regardless of what's right, what aligns with the party's values or, heaven forbid, what is actually in the long term best interest of the people that they are elected to represent.

So sure, welcome in the short term to keep the other party from being in control - but we really, really need to replace these people as soon as possible with actual progressives that will do what's in our best interests. I'm tired of being sold out to the highest bidder all the time.

5. Agreed. We have too many DINO's in the party now.
This is more of the same, to me. They may say they've changed parties, but they could still vote Repub anyway.

2. This is usually the first sign of BIG trouble in a party.
I hope Dem party keeps their shit together enough to take advantage.

Time to donate to DNC and help Dean prepare for a growing infrastructure that needs all the strengthening it can get after being so sorely neglected for a decade.

3. Is this defection or infultration?
I'm on the fence about this trend. We have a party-switcher up for reelection the State House in my district, and I don't trust him one bit.
