this is a really interesting and surprising fact-based movie from 1990. it is playing again tonight - the catch is that its on encore mystery channel at 1 am. but if you get encore movie channels and you are up that late or live on the left coast do check it out.
it stars frances mcdormand ("fargo" and "laurel canyon" most notably) and brian cox. they are wonderful the story involves the IRA, the governments of the US and britain, unchecked power and the lengths to which these entities will go to ensure no one finds out the truth. yes - the BIG truth of their control of everything from who & what parties control govt to oil to the economy etc
she is american and seems to be an experienced international civil rights activist/documentarian? whose boyfriend has been mysteriously killed by local police while they were in ireland (i think) and brian cox is a higher-up investigator called in to find out what really happened. if you follow patrick fitzgerald you should like this guy as well. his understated portrayal was quite good and i thought fairly realistic if one can imagine that world.
this film names actual names which was schocking (to me anyway) and had me riveted. if i had not known this was made in 1990 i would think it was an exposé of current governments
do watch if you can. i missed the first half hour so i will be watching it again and if you do end up seeing it i am interested to know what you think - perhaps contact encore and ask them to show it again at an hour that more people would be able to see it the first time i saw it was a saturday afternoon (on this same channel) so i was fortunate that i stumbled upon it
oh and please keep this kicked until later tonight if possible thanks
