Is this for real? *Shifting Fortunes* msnbc.com

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10740963/

"WASHINGTON - In an ominous election-year sign for Republicans, Americans are leaning sharply toward giving Democrats control of Congress, an AP-Ipsos poll finds. Democrats are favored 49 percent to 36 percent.

The poll was taken this week as Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty to tax evasion, fraud and corruption charges and agreed to aid a federal investigation of members of Congress and other government officials.

President Bush’s job approval remains low — 40 percent in the AP-Ipsos poll. "

DeLay: House GOPERS Call For Elections

January 06, 2006
BREAKING NEWS: HOUSE GOPERS CALL FOR ELECTIONS
The Hotline has learned from three House sources that at least two-dozen House GOPers spanning the ideological spectrum have agreed to sign a letter to House Conference Chair Deborah Pryce (R-OH) requesting new leadership elections in an effort to block Rep. Tom DeLay from reclaiming his post as Maj Leader. A group of members and staffers held a conference call earlier today and plan to hold a second one later in the afternoon as they seek to obtain the required 50 signatures to force the vote.

The sources confirm that the effort to build the list is being led by conservative Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and moderate Rep. Charles Bass (R-NH). Flake has been tasked with lobbying his fellow conservative colleagues, while Bass is in charge of corralling other Tuesday Group moderates.

This is the first sign of what has been, since the Abramoff plea, a quickly-growing, behind-the-scenes effort to ensure that DeLay does not return to the top of the House GOP.

9. So let me see if I've got this right...
The Democrats can gain control of Congress NOT because they're campaigning on issues like:

singlepayer health care
creating jobs and increasing wages
ending the war in Iraq
ending corporate welfare
cleaning up the environment
solving illegal immigration

BUT simply because "the other guys" are crooks.

We are so fucked.

90% of Americans could go to the voting booths and vote for democrats, but if the GOP controls the vote counting process, will it matter?

So if once again, JUST enough republicans win JUST enough races by JUST BARELY enough votes (thanks to electronic sleight of hand) ... what do you think the public will do? Actually take action?

Not likely ... most people are working long hours just to pay their bills. You don't really think they're going to make time for activism or revolution when they have no free time at all anyway.

Even if all of these polls accurately reflect the public's feelings ... will it matter?

Not trying to be pessimistic, but to paraphrase Joseph Stalin ... It doesn't matter who casts the votes, it only matters who counts the votes.

12. If we don't have free & fair elections, it does *not* matter...
Work for election reform folks - '06 is in the bag if all voters get to cast their vote and the votes are counted free and fair.

14. Yes but don't get too excited yet...
What really matters is the district by district polls for each individual race and:

Some Republicans will run unopposed.
Some have gerrymandered safe districts.
and some get the benefit of the "Yeah Congress is full of crooks, but not my guy" attitude
and sometimes we just have a poor candidate to oppose them on our team.

Let's see the district polls please so we can do the real electoral math...

Thanks,

Doug D.
