Diebold thrown out of Florida by hacker

Finnished in Florida

By Nick Farrell: Tuesday 20 December 2005, 06:01

A FINNISH security expert has proved to the supervisor of elections in Leon County Florida that it is a doddle to hack Diebold voting machines.

Harri Hursti took part in a fake election in Leon County using what Diebold calls unhackable technology.

At the beginning of the test election the memory card programmed by Harri Hursti was inserted into an Optical Scan Diebold voting machine. Hursti had pre-loaded the memory card with plus and minus votes.

The eight ballots were run through the optical scan machine. Correct results should have been: Yes:2 ; No:6 However, just as Hursti had planned, the results tape read: Yes: 7 ; No:1

To be fair to Diebold, the Hursti Hack requires a moderate level of inside access, however it does not require a password and it is the same level of access given thousands of poll workers across the USA.

2. We need to take this information to the BoE in North Carolina,
New Mexico, Nevada, and everywhere else. I'm so sick & tired of the damned elections officials being courted & wooed by the damned electronic voting machine lobby. There's just too fucking much conflict of interest going on here. Case in point, Cathy Cox in Georgia, whoring around the country on behalf of Diebold.

6. NC officials are in bed with Diebold
You could hack it in front of their faces in a live election and they would still deny it. Right George Gilbert you SCUM? :argh:

3. The GAO report said that the election workers who had access
to the equipment in Ohio were not properly vetted. It would not take much to switch a few memory cards and that would explain why the vote totals didn't match the registered voters in so many cases.

4. the missing corrollary information....
What no one seems to be pointing out is that this shows that electronic voting platforms are INHERENTLY unreliable. Diebold and others will undoubtedly propose solutions to close this particular security hole if it begins to affect their business, but the word needs to be gotten out that ANY fix can be undone, and any number of other backdoors might exist as long as the code is held secretly. I've come to believe that ALL digital electronic devices are inherently untrustworthy for voting purposes unless their programming-- all of it, from the machine level up-- is open source and their operations are secured by non-partisan officials, and even then there are dangers.

I'm afraid there is simply no substitute for paper ballots, redundant hand counts, and recounts. This makes elections expensive and time consuming. So be it. That's the price of democracy, IMO.
