Less than three months ago, the idea of slicing billions of dollars out of the federal budget was as popular as the notion that lawmakers should work nearly until Christmas.
Now both are probable, due in no small part to Republican Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Dallas.
.......
Hensarling helped craft a budget trimming that draws a good deal of its reductions from cuts to social programs, including food stamps and Medicaid, and as such, has garnered criticism from advocacy groups and some policy analysts. An analysis released Tuesday by the Center for Public Policy Priorities in Austin estimated that the budget cuts would drop at least 76,000 people in Texas off the food stamp program.
.......
"I am quite anxious about this," said Hensarling, 48. "We have the ball on the two-yard line. Our number may not be called to get it accomplished. The voters are watching."
