Holocaust denier goes on trial

By Roger Boyes

Ernst Zündel, 66, a leading Holocaust denier who wrote a book entitled The Hitler We Loved and Why, went on trial in Germany yesterday.

He was deported from Canada eight months ago after being pursued by German authorities for several years. He is charged with inciting racial hatred, libel and disparaging the dead.

Herr Zündel, who runs the biggest neo-Nazi mail-order company in Europe and publishes pamphlets denying that the Holocaust happened, sat between his lawyers at the court in Mannheim while supporters packed the viewing gallery. The trial will be a test of the limits of state action against anti-Semitic internet sites. If found guilty Herr Zündel faces up to five years in jail and the authorities would be able to shut down his publishing empire.

The German authorities have been seeking his extradition since 2003, and police believe that he is part of an international network that includes Russian ultra-nationalists and Dutch and French neo-Nazis.

1. How can anybody deny that the holocaust happened?
There were several thousand eyewitnesses to the aftermath and there were and are still a few survivors left. This guy and others like him are insane.

2. So called historian David Irving did for nearly 20 years until US
expert Dr Deborah Lipstadt testified against him in UK libel courts.

Irving lost.

Went bankrupt owing more than £2million.

Hahahahahahaha.

5. They try & chip away at the facts, bit by bit
One time in a thousand they get something right (ie 400 rather than 450 jews were killed that month) then use that fact to try and discredit the entire Holocaust.

It was noticeable that in all the publicity about those two neo-Nazi girl singers ("Prussian Blue") this month, not one media source mentioned that they are called that in their own words - "There is also the discussion of the lack of "Prussian Blue" coloring (Zyklon B residue) in the so-called gas chambers in the concentration camps. We think it might make people question some of the inaccuracies of the "Holocaust" myth."

It's depressing that even people on DU continue to post things from sites like Rense.com & whatreallyhappened.com who defend Zundel:

http://www.rense.com/Datapages/zunddata.htm
http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/kangaroo.html

and this from Zundel's website:

The Internet, too, was alert and responsive to this tectonic political shift. Especially the Globe and Mail article, titled "Ernst Zundel: Civil Rights champion?" appeared on many prominent websites, for instance, on www.rense.com and www.whatreallyhappened.com - at the latter website with this editorial comment:

"Public opinion is beginning to turn towards Ernst and away from his persecutors. Ernst has not been charged with a crime, let alone convicted. The bottom line is that Ernst is being persecuted for questioning dogma, exactly the same crime for which Galileo was tortured. Truth needs no laws to support it. Throughout history, it is only lies that required the force of the courts to mandate belief."

9. I don't get it.
Anyone should be free to deny/accept anything. I don't understand why denying the holocaust is any different from denying evolution... we should be allowed to believe anything and say anything, as long as it doesn't harm anyone.

There are no objective truths in history. The evidence for the holocaust is overwhelming, just as it is for evolution. But no one should be 'called to account' because he disagrees with the conclusions from the evidence, or denies the evidence.

13. Thought Crime
This seems like thought crime to me. Even though this guy is full of shit he should be allowed to spew whatever he wishes. I hate to see people persecuted for their opinions, no matter how much I disagree with them.
