"Either the religious faith of a Supreme Court nominee matters as a qualification for the office, or it doesn't – but you can't have it both ways. Unfortunately, the White House has tried to do just that and may have inadvertently complicated the confirmation of Ms. Miers and future conservative religious believers who will come before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Earlier this week, when prominent conservatives stung the White House with their instant and myopic rejection of Ms. Miers' nomination, the administration worked to publicize the nominee's born-again status. The goal here was to shore up support among evangelicals worried that the stealth nominee was wobbly on social issues.
There was a clear gain; prominent religious conservatives like Dr. James Dobson and Chuck Colson publicly vouched for the nominee. But this could turn out to be a case of short-term gain, long-term loss for conservatives. "
