New Orleans Mayor pissing off Republicans
In a press conference this afternoon, Mayor Nagin said, amongst other things, that corruption will not be tolerated and contracts to rebuild New Orleans must be transparent. He also said if you want business in New Orleans you will pay our people well. Now, I don't know if those things will happen but zero corruption and transparent contracts are certainly not gop "values."

FEMA is getting its ass kicked in a public forum in New Orleans today mostly about contracts being given to out of state companies. Local businessmen have their hair on fire about it and giving FEMA an earful.

2. I read a clip from Mary L. about how FEMA is sitting on $41 million
...that they won't release to the state/city?!

Nagin has had to fire people because they can't pay them, and big contractors from Halliburton/KBR are sucking up contracts while small business owners are scrouging for business...

Sounds like *'s idea of doing a 'heckuva job'!

3. Local rightwing radio was dog cussing FEMA today and praising
Congressman Bennie Thompson. I was so shocked I thought I'd run off the road. For those wingnuts to praise Thompson is incredible! They were impressed that FEMA had backed off and started allowing local companies to have open bids for cleanup contracts after Thompson and Lott blasted them ion congress yesterday.

4. Hi Rowdy
Good to "hear" from you. Ain't ole trent sounding like a flaming liberal lately? Government money to help people - egads!!!

Got the last of the stumps removed from our one acre of solitude yesterday. Still got a mess but things are looking better. The downside; we can see our neighbors houses now. Picayune's population tripled in the last month. Constant traffic jams in Picayune? Who'da thunk it? We hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

7. Between the fallen trees
and the tractors on the property our flower beds have been pretty well "weeded." I'm excited about the new look though. My mind is whirling with ideas to replant and where to put more trees. I hope to have some trees planted this fall.

8. Actually, we're doing the exact same thing.....Everything has gotten
out of hand and, after Katrina, we decided it was time to "rethink" the garden. I'm gonna rebuild beds, change their shapes, get rid of a few things and MULCH THE HELL out of everything. I'm tired of weeding and its too damn hot to breathe in summer. Everything gets overgrown and I get pissed.

Thats all gonna change this fall and winter. Actually, I should be out there right now. Oh well. It'll be there tomorrow, and it'll be even cooler then.

5. The story in the papers about the ice truck going on a 4000 mile journey
on the taxpayer's dime under FEMA contract will make any "fiscal conservative" cringe. The time for them to put up or shut up has long expired, don't you think ? And now they're stonewalling any oversight or investigation into what caused things to go so wrong. We can only hope that LA, MS, and AL voters all remember that the Dems and progressives were looking out for them...the R's were busy lining privatization deals and kickbacks to buddys.
