She is a stealth pick. That is the type Bush thinks can get confirmed easily.

I'll be she is conservative. SMU is like the anti-Berkeley.

That should be enough to disqualify her. We have NO clue where she stands but is that important when Bush gives us the most blatant example of cronyism in a very long time.

2. ru kidding???
she's bush's WH attorney. Cronyism. From Wikopedia

Harriet Ellan Miers is the White House Counsel in the Presidential Administration of U.S. President George W. Bush, replacing Alberto Gonzales who was appointed Attorney General. She was previously Bush's Deputy Chief of Staff.

Miers, a Texas native, studied at Southern Methodist University, where she earned undergraduate and law degrees. She was an attorney in private practice until 2000 and was George W. Bush's personal lawyer. In 1985, she became the first female president of the Dallas Bar Association and in 1992 became the first woman to head the Texas State Bar. She was also elected to one term as an at-large member on the Dallas City Council.

During George Bush's term as Governor of Texas, Miers chaired the Texas Lottery Commission (1995-2000) and then followed Bush to Washington, DC, serving as Assistant to the President and Staff Secretary during the first two years of his presidential term. In 2003, she rose to the post of Deputy Chief of Staff and is said to be a close personal friend of the president. In November 2004, Bush named her to succeed Alberto Gonzales, his nominee for Attorney General, to the post of White House Counsel, the chief legal advisor for the Office of the President.

Loyalty, not ideology, is the important quality. The right wing Christian thing is just a political ploy and has nothing to do with the core beliefs of the Bush junta. Follow the money is the mantra with the Bush crime family.

10. bang on the money there...
anyone who researches the history of the ruling elite since the early 20th century will quickly realise that these people are essentially apolitical and amoral. What they are interested in is money, not political ideology. To them the left-right debate provides a means to distract the people from the real issues. They are laughing all the way to the bank as they have done for decades.

7. Donated to Al Gore, Lloyd Bentsen and the DNC
She made these donations in '88 then started only giving to Republicans after that. One wonders why she wouldn't give to Bush senior when she donated regularly to Republicans after that date.

I'm actually optimistic since she was a president of the Texas Bar and the Dallas Bar. Wackos don't get those jobs since a good portion of the bar is to the left of the general public (particularly in a place like Texas).

We'll obviously have to see.

9. What kind of person could be "a close personal friend" of W's?
And this friendship goes back a long way. As his personal lawyer, she has to have been exposed to the full measure of all of his negative characteristics - his greed, his callous jokes as he imposed the death penalty, his piss poor parenting, his laziness, his extremely disfunctional extended family, his contempt for the environment, and on and on and on. Since the woman was intelligent enough to get through law school, her "friendship" speaks volumes of her abilty to suck up for her personal gain.

Seriously, I'd love to see a list of your third party unbiased sources. I don't believe in unbiased anything, one can only judge by the facts usually buried in an informations source.

If I took everything at face value, I'd be a gullible fool (and Bush voter).

Civics 101
Not all our law is embodied in statutes and in other documents such as the constitution. We also use precedent (e.g., case law or the common law). Since facts vary from case to case (some people slip and fall on fresh banana peels while others slip and fall on slimy old balck banana peels - should this make a difference?) judges must be proactive in applying the law. And since legislators pass statutes without defining the verbage they use in their legislation (i.e. what does it really mean to loiter? what behavior is prohibited by a statute that prohibits loitering? better yet what does it mean to be disabled?) judges must also interpret the meaning of those statutes (a prohibition against loitering would be struck down as being vague). This is not judicial activism. It is the rightful role of one branch of government acting as a check on the powers of another branch of government. Without these powers the judiciary becomes little more than a rubber stamp for the legislature - and that is not the role they are intended to have.

48. Where are the facts upon which you base your "opinion"?
The legal definition of "opinion" is "a formal statement of reasons for a judgment given." You state your expectations, but on what facts are these expectations based? Do you blindly endorse everyone or anyone whom Bush nominates to a position? If not, exactly why do you support this candidate? I am curious, because so little is known of her values or beliefs, other than that she has stated that Bush is the most brilliant man she has ever met.

Of course you realize that Bush and his handlers would never nominate anyone to the Supreme Court unless they were quite comfortable that he or she would never think independently. I personally think she was nominated because she has no paper trail of opinions upon which she can be questioned or evaluated.
There are many moderate judges, with excellent credentials, from whom Bush could have selected a candidate. He chose a true stealth candidate.

Tell us, what are you doing to support all the crippled and maimed Iraq vets whose access to VA treatment has been so severely cut back by Bush? What about your efforts to make sure that our young men and women get basic equipment without being told to buy their own protection vests, water camels, etc.?
I don't believe you are re-activating. If you were going to do that, you would have done it by now. Or have you been guaranteed a stateside posting? Why didn't you reactivate a year ago? You know that the situation in Iraq has deteriorated even more in the last month and that they are on the verge of civil war - EXACTLY THE PREDICTED OUTCOME which persuaded Bush Sr. to pull out of Iraq the first time around.

43. What a waste
And here I thought I was going to get some insight into how freepers think.

But there are no thoughts to evaluate. Just 'you are wrong...you are wrong...you are wrong...'

51. You're living proof why Bush appeals to so many dumb people
who lie through their teeth and are afraid of their own fucking shadows. He's just like you.

79. "Lie through their teeth"
I think you mean "tooth."
John
Or was that a collective "teeth?" I'm certain the gang(sters) at FR must have 60 or 70 teeth amongst them.
Anyhow -- Hi, ED. And bye, ED.

52. LOL! "a book" or "a newspaper"
Sounds like the learned footnotes we can expect on the legal opinions written by Bush's latest Supreme Court nominee!
Imagine this guy's answers to his kids' questions. "Because I said so, that's why!"
You know he's still reading these posts. He just doesn't have the cojones or brains or guts to try to respond.

53. Wait, ED I still want to hear YOUR facts
You keep talking about "facts, facts, gimme some damn facts" yet you still haven't given us any facts to support what YOU'RE saying.

I also don't understand this sentence:
"why don't you get off your rear, go to the store, buy a book and READ... buy a newspaper and read it ... alot of things get published in both of those sources that never make it to the highly biased liberalistic media"

(FYI - you forgot to end your period with a sentence. I know you're a grammar/syntax stickler. And "liberalistic" is not actually a word. "Liberal" is the word you're looking for here. Just trying to help.)

Funny thing is, I think liberals read more than Freepers. Freepers just regurgitate the day's talking points. How do we know? Because RWers like you only know how to refute by beleaguering and insulting and screaming, "YOU'RE WRONG, YOU'RE UN-AMERICAN, YOU'RE AN UNPATRIOTIC COMMIE!"

I love an intellectual debate as much as the next guy but I'm sorry, ED. You debate like the rest of the uninformed, brainwashed, talking-point spewing Freeps.

Come back when YOU know some facts so we can actually discuss something without insulting one another's patriotism (or lack THEREOF...please note the spelling, ED, for future reference.)

67. Why not? Look at Roberts
A mere 2 years on ANY bench, and he's "qualified" to be Chief Justice?

It's clear that the Chimp could care less about qualifications. Look at "Brownie". Look at Chertoff. Look at the Chimp himself, a failure at every job his daddy ever bought him.

Miers is the typical BCE nominee, not the exception.

And she'll be confirmed, with the help of at least 22 spineless jellyfish who call themselves "Democrats"

73. But in his defense, (only as a comparison)
he has drafted many motions seeking the court to accept a case, he has written many USSC pleadings - and I gotta tell you, there is a lot of work that goes into them. He has argued upwards of 20 USSC oral arguments. Most lawyers are proud if they argue a case before their state appellate court. Once. To have done it multiple times is truly a huge amount of experience.

That is not to say that I agree with his selection. I don't. I am proud of Illinois' senators, both of whom voted no.

As for the rest of your post, you and I agree 100%. She is there because she is a hatchet worker FOB. And she will be confirmed, unless she is found in bed with a dead girl or a live boy. Or is it the other way around?

68. Bush nominee Miers steered group aimed at deprogramming gays
Freepers apparently missed this in this case.

http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Bush_nominee_Miers_steered_group_aimed_1003.html

Bush's nominee to the Supreme Court is a former board member of EXODUS Ministries, perhaps the world's largest organization that seeks to "save" men and women from a life of same-sex relationships, RAW STORY has discovered.

"Live-in" ministries don't just focus on deprogramming gays -- they also train transvestites and transsexuals how to become "normal."

Exodus promises the "fullness of redemption found in Jesus Christ, a gift which is available to all who commit their life and their sexuality to Him."

71. Andrew Sullivan says there are two Exodus Ministries:
This one:

http://www.phpc.org/templates/cusprestonhollow/details.asp?id=29712&PID=242832

That deals win cons and ex-cons

And this one:

http://www.exodus-international.org/

That "deprograms" gays...

This needs to be clarified...
