On another "test" I was libertarian.

Honestly, many of these labels elude me, but I'm going to read up on it.....:-)

Maybe you took the little quiz I posted yesterday. It turned out that it's a little skewed - most people end up as libertarians or liberals with that quiz.

This one's much better. :)

13. Myself included I think technically most of us here on DU are social
libertarians.

I personally believe government has no place in media content, things like censorship, entertainment, what people do in their bedrooms ect.

I see no reason for the FCC's existence. Oh sure the parent's brigade might come down on me for this, but quite frankly if the radio was filled with nothing but smut and it actually survived i.e. people still listened to it well then that just tells you something about our "moral" society, not to mention government not regulating what you hear on the radio which you can just turn off, isn't quite the same as the government ignoring crooked business practices which DO affect you.

you mean libertarian socialist. I think libertarian socialist refers to both politics and economics, but social libertarian might mean just more socially liberal?

Anyone know for sure?

Edit: I've notice Noam Chomsky calls himself a libertarian socialist, and I agree with quite a bit of what I've heard from him.

76. You're mostly right
I'm a libertarian socialist, which in the old days used to be called just plain old anarchists, but that doesn't work very well these days because people haven't got the foggiest notion as to what anarchism is about. Note that anarchy and anarchism are two different words. Probably the best example of libertarian socialism in action would be the Zapatistas of Chiapas, Mexico. A social libertarian is probably better termed a civil libertarian, meaning they take a pretty strong stance on free speech, free thought, and free conscience.

79. Right.
A libertarian socialist is a form of anarchist. For example, an anarcho-syndicalist is a type of libertarian socialist. Chomsky is that and they believe in the absence of the state, but that labor should band together to form the workplace. (That is over-simplified).

Social libertarian would be different and mean more like civil libertarian or civic libertarian...libertarian on social issues/rights.

98. I'm not a parent, but I think there does need to be some regulation.
It has to do with how kids learn, and how they percieve the world around them. How does, for instance, Howard Stern teach young men (boys) to think about women? OR, young women (girls) to think about themselves? Young kids don't have the experience in life to put a show like Stern's into some sort of perspective. They learn what society is and who they are from EVERYTHING around them.

We have to find some way of balancing our American freedoms with our need to raise a healthy next generations of Americans.

122. luckily..
Howard Stern is just one little guy on the radio. If you're worried about him "teaching" men how to think about women, I think you're giving him way too much credit.

Kids are smarter than many people realize, and if they have enough positive influences in their lives, they can separate the good from the bad.

If you don't like Howard, don't listen to him. Freedom of speech is essential in a free society.

Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 01:07 AM by Wordie
BUT you aren't being realistic about kids, imho.

You said about kids:
<snip>
"...and if they have enough positive influences in their lives"

I think that may be the entire point. There are an awful lot of kids who DON"T have enough positive influences in their lives. Not to mention that popular culture, during the teen years (and preteen as well), is a mighty competitor with the postive influence of parents anyway (and Howard's cool). I am not saying take him off the radio or tv, but...

...I guess the question is how do we do a good job of raising the next generation and keep our freedom of speech too. I don't know how, but I think it's a topic worth thinking about and discussing.

...and the issue was never whether I personally like or dislike Howard.

edited to add one item I had not responded to:
Stern was just one example, there are lots of others on the airwaves, although I do think he may have more influence than you think he does.

134. he's moving to satellite radio
I appreciate your comments.

Howard Stern is moving to satellite radio, so hopefully that will quell the calls for his radio show to be banned, although I know many members of Congress are now wanting to regulate what we see and hear on cable TV, satellite radio, and the internet - in addition to the "public airwaves".

125. I come out as a Libertarian Socialist on Political Compass
This one puts me as a socialist, but libertarianism is on the opposite end of the economic spectrum. I believe the test excludes any possibility of left libertarianism, as opposed to right libertarianism. If several people voluntarily enter into a relationship where their skills and whatever resources they have are shared among all for the mutual benefit of all involved, I would think that would be an example of libertarian socialism.

no surprise, really.

social liberal, 86% permissive on social issues
economic liberal, only 18% permissive on economic issues

but I don't believe that the state should own all property. that means "socialist," as i understand the marxist/leninist term, is not an accurate description.

but no need to be so strict in the definition either. I mean we call Chavez a socialist but he essentially implemented FDR's New Deal. Sweden has socialist programs but capitalism, too. They are a welfare state. Democratic Socialism/Social Democrats.

92. You're right, of course.
France has a Socialist party, for example, that's merely liberal, not really socialist in its pure sense. I'm just sensitive that in the U.S. post WWII, "socialist" is right-wing code for "commie pinko," and I am resistant to that label because it marginalizes the opinion and voice of anyone who is so-labeled.

148. I agree and prefer to be called just Democrat.
Right wingers can use "Socialist" as a smear because so many Americans don't understand the enormous differences between the old Soviet "socialism" and western Europe's Democratic Socialism, which has always been its opposite.

I also don't quite like the presentation graphic of the quiz which sets "Socialist" apart from "Capitalist". Every nation ever run by social democrats has been capitalistic (last time I checked, 96% of Sweden's industry was in private hands, and always was).

My grade? Socialist - Social Liberal 73%, Economics Liberal 18%.

Yes, connotations, because we are in the US and socialism is made out to be evil.

The truth is that Stalin and Mao were social fascists, not really socialists. In the chart that you saw, they would be described as totalitarian.

There were also capitalist fascists such as Moussilini. BushCo is pretty much headed in the direction of capitalist fascism, too. Note the heavy pro-corporate agenda and the agenda to remove civil liberties:
Bankruptcy Bill
Patriot Act
Underfund No Child Left Behind
Homeland Security Act
Privatize Social Security
Destroy Medicaid
Patriot II
Downsize/Privatize FEMA
Wars for Money and nothing-but
Operation CopperGreen
etc, etc, etc...

Clinton.

93. This is why
most activist socialists in the US end up in the Green Party. Typically, the ISO (International Socialist Organization) is out working with the Green Party for example. Probably most armchair socialists do something different.

I believe the US Green Party tries to say it is neither capitalist nor socialist, but there is a huge overlap with the values of socialism.
