19. My Congressman Proposed the Bill...

... so writing to him is superfluous. We had a doctor who works in this field speak to us at synagogue last week and as I listen to the representatives on C-Span today I'm amazed at the misinformation that's being presented about the technology. Do any of the representatives even ask for professional input when they make decisions? Well, someone else is speaking now, and at least some apparently know what they're talking about. It does make you wonder, though.

At the same time, I do wonder about the original technology... the IVF technology. With so many children in foster care in this nation now, and so many of them suffering crushing poverty throughout the world, why on earth does anyone want to create a child through IVF? Why aren't couples adopting children who need homes and why aren't couples and singles getting involved in sponsorship programs and such that work to provide for poor children in other nations?

There are, nonetheless, existing embryos that unless used will be discarded. By all means, if suffering can be ended by using these embryos, then use the embryos and end it.

Let's say you are in a building on fire, and as you are running out, you look into a room and see a little boy, too scared to move. You are hit with courage, and decide to save the boy. Next to the boy you see a big suitcase labeled "Embryos. 100." You can only carry one (the boy is too scared to move) so do you save the boy or the suitcase of embryos?

If the opponent says "The boy, of course" counter with "But wait, I thought you people thought embryos are lives!"

If the opponent says "The embryos" label them a murderer. That's what they are.
