W actually said something positive last night
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 09:11 AM by Marnieworld
I know, I couldn't believe it myself. We all, as the recent flamewars have proven, have quite a diverse opinion about religion and god etc. Yet I hope we'd all like a world where we all belonged. I myself am non-sectarian agnostic so it was quite pleasing for me to hear * say,

"The great thing about America, David, is that you should be allowed to worship any way you want, and if you choose not to worship, you're equally as patriotic as somebody who does worship"

Do I think he really believes this? No. It certainly is a direct contradiction to what his father has said on record. Of course, this statement will do nothing to stop the right's stampede toward theocracy. Yet it is still nice when the POTUS goes on record, on national television and makes this statement. In a country with God on the money, god mixed up with allegiance to the country and a chaplain paid for with tax payers money it's nice to be mentioned that I even exist. To think that there are Americans that do not worship ANYTHING!?

What's also nice is that we Dems could isolate this quote to really really piss off the fundies. Put it on signs and posters. Remember it as a moment when common sense human, AMERICAN, acceptance bubbled up from his unconscious despite his best efforts to be intolerant. Then again, he also said that we are taking the people trying to harm us out of harm's way so who listens to this idiot anyway? A girl can dream...

2. W's focus group derived talking point.....
...."The great thing about America, David, is that you should be allowed to worship any way you want, and if you choose not to worship, you're equally as patriotic as somebody who does worship".

Total Bushit! He said it, but he doesn't believe it and certainly has shown great intolerance toward people with faith and belief that fall outside his narrow range of ultra-conservative fundamentalist Christianity. This is the wolf pretending to be a sheep to a primetime TV audience and the select press corp.

7. even so
He's shameless about his anti-homosexual bigotry. No focus group is gonna change that talking point. Yet he at least realized that he has to pretend to accept. It's progress at a snail's pace but it's progress.

16. did you know that the most rabid anti-gay people are those who have never
confronted their own homosexuality--for as carl jung says there is a homosexual (attracted to same sex person) beating in every human heart....and people who may have experienced that certain attraction to a same sex person and become horrified at the thought ... are the ones who then become the most rabid anti homosexual people as if in preventing others from their homosexuality they are preventing their own... and guess what ... their own homosexuality is bound to hit them in the face when they least expect it.

17. How does anyone know what is in everyone's heart?
I'm unsure that there is a homosexual in every bigot. I know it's a popular theory but there is probably a different reason for bigotry as there are bigots. There are a lot of truly ignorant people who could be evolved from their bigotry based on ignorance. It's not necessarily a knee-jerk self-loathing response to their own impulses. It's like the only thing to say to a homophobe is , "I know you are but what am I?" like Pee Wee Herman.

I think it's just basic human weakness that makes people lump people together in groups so they can feel superior to those groups. For some fundies hating the gays is like feeling superior to jews just because they both contradict their strict biblical interpretation and they love feeling superior. It's comforting.

18. I suppose that could be said about almost any intolerance ...
...and prejudice and ignorance by human beings. They hate and fear what they have never experienced. I suppose though, to some people, killing could be stimulating, even exhilarating, but I would never consider murdering someone to find out if it really does that for me.

There have to be some boundaries if we are all to live in a civilized and humanitarian way together on this planet.

4. he's not sincere about that, he still gets the benefit from the base
he pushes them away but in the end he still uses them. The only reason for the pushback this time is becasue of the poll numbers regarding the issue, if the numbers went the other way then he'd be singing a different tune.

6. Just like swiftboats
He keeps out of the frey with some vanilla non response while his minions continue with the dirty work. Even though all this faith bashing is going on around him in his name he claims no knowledge. If he doesn't say it out loud it doesn't exist. They got their religious freedom sound bite from him last night. It will be used for the "he's not trying to do that, silly" talking point.

13. Ding, ding, ding----we have a winner here!
you get a case of turtle wax and a lifetime supply of rice-a-roni! that is exactly what Bush does, and he did the same thing to McCain in 99, he kneecapped him and then stepped away and said how terrible it was that people would smear McCain like that.

That's right, and now let's all bow our heads and say the Lord's prayer.

I know you're right. Non-believers are so excluded from the national dialogue that even when he's lying, I'm happy just to be mentioned.

15. He's a horseless cowboy and an unlicensed pilot of an aircraft no longer
in service...he is left with his three favorite activities...cheerleading, plotting set-ups for revenge or betrayal, and raking sage since (apparently) he had to give us his bicycle. Equilibrium problems on wheels and in policies.

Blame his handlers for everything - he is only the ineffective, but dunce perfect front man.

19. When I heard * say that line...
I immediately thought it was some sort of code to his followers. He didn't even say it in a nice way-but then again, during the entire press conference he was abrupt, cold and mean. I think his nasty-ass attitude-more than any of the crapola he's pulling-will be what turns his followers against him.

And I'm keeping my fingers crossed about that one!

20. He ALWAYS does that shit
After he had his attack dogs besmirch McCain in SC in 2000 by saying he had a black baby and was crazed on drugs, he said "I don't know anything about it and think McCain is great"

The fucker will say anything to keep the whackos in power.

HIS FUCKING BASE does not believe what he just said, and they all know HE doesn't believe what he just said.

The naivete is defeaning in here today
