Why do you guys like Mark Warner so much?
I know he's a dem governor but didn't he basically allow the most anti-gay legislation ever to come out of VA? I'm not down with that. What am I missing?

1. He spoke at GA's Jefferson Jackson dinner this year
I thought he was real slick... a little too slick if you get my drift. Packaging looks all nice and shiny, but not sure if I would trust him as far as I can throw him (and I don't work on upper body strength).

2. What anti-gay leg are you referring too?
I like him for a lot of reasons:

1. He made money before getting into politics - most politicians have never run a business or created a job in their lives, but love to take credit for it when jobs are created. These politicians couldn't run a successful business to save their lives, and this is rampant in BOTH parties. Warner has great business sense, and with our piss poor economy, this is attractive.

2. He doesn't hide his intentions. He told VA that if they weren't going to support a tax increase, then DL centers and other state buildings would close and be consolidated. VA didn't support it, at least initially but last year at a tax hike was passed, and he kept true by closing many DL centers. He gave the public a choice, they choose, and he acted.

3 He is GREAT on gun rights! THis issues kills us in so many states, and the Nation just had an article on it. Warner doesn't punish law abiding gun owners to get at criminals. ADditionally, he has taken a lot of steps to give gun owners the rights they should have had a while ago in VA.

4. He has a good environemtal record. This is important to me, like issue 3, and may not resonate much with the rest of DU. BUt I love fishing, hiking, hunting, and other outdoor activities. Warner does well for us in this regard.

IF he passes any anti gay legislation, this is a surprise to me. I remember when he ran he was criticized for stating he would NOT support a ban on gay marriage...he also stated he is pro choice, and would not support parental notification (if memory serves me correctly).

I think that NPR story on Warner discusses it.

I listened to the whole story you link to and there is no mention of anti-gay legislation or gay rights, marriage, etc. at all.

And I found a story that he signed into law legislation to extend to gay partners insurance rights

(Richmond, Virginia) Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner has signed legislation allowing insurers and businesses to extend health-insurance coverage to same-sex couples. It becomes effective July 1.

...

" provides a long-overdue option to Virginia businesses," said Warner. "It allows private employers to extend group accident and sickness coverage to any class of persons agreed upon by the insurer and the group policyholder."

9. He's very well liked in this state on both party sides.
He recently attended a dinner sponsored by a high school Dem club, I thought that was sweet.

13. My repub friends in the Repub heavy districts like him alot
there are many repub voters, like them, that vote for Repubs based on that party being the "business" party, however, every one of them thinks he is way better than any Repub in the state.

I hope Warner gets the nomination in 08.

4. Dems have lowered their standards
As many DUers have noted, you have to make sacrifices (on subjects like gay civil rights and women's right to make decisions about their own healthcare) if we're to compete with the Repukes.

He's a dem who has won a red statewide race. There's nothing special about him otherwise.

Plus VA is so close to the beltway that it means little & will vote for the Republican prez nominee no matter what.

The only person that can do any good for the party in 2008 might be Bayh. He could deliver IN & OH's 31 ev's. These are the only red states that once supported a Republican by the name of Lincoln.

12. I don't. I just think that people see that he's a "moderate"
Southern Governor and think that's the magical formula for winning an election.
