Quick, put a tube in the pope!
Pope 'abandons self to God's will'
John Paul absent from Good Friday services
Friday, March 25, 2005 Posted: 4:18 AM EST (0918 GMT)

VATICAN CITY -- A cardinal who stood in for Pope John Paul II in a Holy Week ceremony at the Vatican said the ailing pontiff was "serenely abandoning" himself to God's will.

4. I'm shocked you would feel that way
But do tell, why is it appropriate for the pope to apparently decide to forgo further treatment and allow himself to be 'in the lord's hands'?

8. The vatican is being deliberately obscure.
But just for the sake of argument, just suppose that the pope has decided to forgo further treatment, shouldn't we be all in a tizzy about that as well?

10. But no one has said he will forgo treatment. So why have a "tizzy?"

13. You are not alone
from the same folks who brought us "Schiavo humor" like "If she lives, she can run for president!" since she has as much brain power as Bush.

Yeah, real funny.

Might have been funny if it had made any sense. If their two illnesses were anything alike. Oh, I suppose I'd "get the joke" if I thought about it longer. But frankly, I haven't had my caffeine yet, and what few brain cell that are firing are saying "Nah, really don't wanna go there."

15. I find it ironic
that the pope is apparently allowed to decide to 'put himself in god's hands', without any furor or todo. If you don't see the connection I'm sorry for you. Irony is one of the great pleasures of human awareness.

2. But I thought
Catholics didn't believe in suicide and if you just abandon yourself rather than knowingly employ every known means of staying alive isn't that a form of suicide?

Just a thought...if the Pope is so ill/frail that he wishes to abandon himself to God...then so be it. He should be left to make that decision without any interference.

5. I agree...why do they want him to die?
Why don't the Christians do everything they can to keep him alive forever? I'm deadly serious about this. What is the fucking difference?

6. The difference is republicans secretly know everyone's going to hell ...
including themselves. That's why they do their scorched-earth materialism. Because the rapture is NOW.

9. The pope knows when God has called him home!
If Schiavo's parents had an ounce of faith they would let her soul go to God!

I may not agree with all of the popes sentiments, but a good Catholic is willing to submit to God the soul he/she was endowed with at birth because he/she knows DEATH is just a continuation of the journey God wants us all to take!

14. Slight difference
The pope is 80-something years old.

And a reminder from the DU rules:

"Do not post messages that are bigoted against (or grossly insensitive toward) any person or group of people based on their...religion..."

by all means go complain to the mods. Perhaps you can get this thread censored. Wouldn't you feel powerful then?

19. right, just a 'friendly reminder'.
Got it. Whatever.

So back to the subject. Why is it ok for an 80 year old to decide to let nature take its course, but not for a 41 year old?

20. It's okay for both
In my opinion. The only issue I have with the Schiavo case is that her estranged husband is the only person to whom she ever expressed her wishes. If this were a trial there is more than enough reasonable doubt to rule against Michael Schiavo. If there was nobody who wanted to take custody and care for her I'd say let her go, but since her parents, brother, and sister all seem willing to be responsible for her care I say let them have her. Where's the harm?

But when freepers say that removing the tube from someone = "playing God..."

wasn't putting the tube IN in the first place playing God as well?
