MSM is not really covering Gannon story
There are a few going after it, notably Olberman. CNN did a SUNDAY AFTERNOON piece today, but who the hell watches Sunday afternoon news? There have been some editorials, but as for the "real" MSM, the nightly news that the Wal Mart Nation is most likely to see, the Clear Channel radio broadcasts the Wal Mart Nation is most likely to be listening to, they simply are not covering it. And we need this "real" fake MSM if this is going to get to critical mass.

Anyway, I've been working on site updates, and posted a new cartoon today. You guessed it...about Gannongate and the MSM...

New NBY Cartoon - Gannon and the MSM

1. NYT, WAPO, New Yorker....
...it's growing, slowly, surely.

Enough letters to the editor, comments, feedback, and it will grow ten foot legs and stride across the heartland.

3. Three papers the right dismisses as "liberals"
I, too, am heartened by these three "mainstream" publications, but face it, you cannot quote the NYT to a righty without him snickering. We need the nightly news and the radio news to be talking about it. Remember, we're political junkies here. We read and watch everything political. The Wal Mart Nation does not. If they're lucky, they grab ten minuted of evening headlines, that's it.

But this is hardly "mainstream" yet. Not at all. Not if I can go three days without hearing a word about it!

5. Do your part!!!
Fire off a letter to your favorite paper, or your local conservative publication funded by the GOP. Demand information!!! Keep shoving their little puppy noses in the dog poop on the carpet!

It is possible to be an activist without waving a sign on a cold street corner. These here internets have given us the power, if only we will use it. Take five minutes, fire up your email, and exercise the authority we still have!

12. Please do not misunderstand me
I love street corner sign wavers, I love freeway bloggers, I love it ALL. It is ALL GOOD, and ALL IMPORTANT!

But I have family members and friends who don't have the luxury of being able to do these things...they work two jobs, or one ten hours a day, they have kids, they have to shuffle between work and home, and if they are lucky, they can wrest a couple of hours between 11 PM and midnight or 1 AM to get online, catch up, and do what they can.

All I'm saying is, whatever you can do, do it...even if it is bitching to the lamestream media via email. It's a numbers game, and they need to see that we pay better attention than the sheep over on the right side of the pasture.

2. Give it time and keep writing letters demanding they cover it.
Maybe someone can do a meda blaster for us? That would be a great way to get this out there and remind them that we want this story covered and exposed further.

4. There are others.
The Daily Show, and CBS' Leslie Stahl on Bill Maher last night. People are starting to hear and question. I'll bet there are many in the mainstream media that are really angry over this and/or how they've been stonewalled by this administration.

9. CNN had two good segements on it today
I mean good ones. Big screen shots of DailyKos and Americablog during the stories. It's Sunday, and lots of Americans who don't even know what a blog is, will be visiting the sites tonight and learning all the details. Water cooler talk tomorrow, it builds, slowly, but it grows.

11. The mainstream media is PART of this story
because like it or not, it reflects on them as much as Gannon--why didn't THEY know or question what was going on?

More important, this is not an isolated incident. Remember those fake PR pieces? The yawning kid on Letterman? Armstrong Williams defending his taking A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS for promoting Bush policies by saying "There are others?" Robert Novak and Valarie Plame? Gannon isn't a single blip on the screen, he's a symptom of a greater disease--a disease that has put the MSM between a rock and a hard place.

Olberman and the editorialists you speak of are reacting properly by mixing righteous indignation with doing their jobs--they're distancing themselves from Gannon while treating the story AS a story. CNN's Aaron Brown and Carol Lin have both used the term "So what?" Their strategy seems to involve minimizing the story by turning Gannon's prostiitution into a "privacy" issue while demonizing the bloggers. The real question is, are they doing this out of sincerity, professionalism, or fear they they will lose their own seats at the Bush White House's table?

13. I'm still hopeful
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 12:32 AM by Blue Christmas
I've heard it said many times that the weekend is the "down time" in the media cycle, so I'm trying not to read TOO much into the usual failings of the MSM. Besides, as you said Atman, who watches news on Sunday anyway?

I'm hopeful that when the news cycle starts up again Monday that some more people will pick it up and run with it. I've also seen signs (or possibly imagined them) that the beleaguered folks at CBS might use this story to wreak revenge on those self-righteous and sanctimonious bastards who set them up.

And maybe I'm just getting way too cynical, rocknation, but am I the only one who feels like everyone who goes out of their way to defend or distort this issue when they do cover it is on the administration's payroll?

Regardless, the twelve HBO channels I get on my cable have been relentlessly playing Real Time over and over again this weekend. It's playing three times in the next three hours alone! So I hope that with all the play that Bill gave it and the additional comments by Robin Williams, Leslie Stahl, and Joe Biden during the show give it some momentum going into the new news week.

Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 12:36 AM by ClassWarrior
There's NOTHING mainstream about their twisted agenda of greed and manipulation!! Please call them the Corporate Media. <okay, rant over>

By the way, I gave out a ton of Solidarity Clip cards this weekend. Thanks again for posting it.
