Jeff Gannon... ugh... why?
Why do we continually become obsessed with worthless stories? As a webmaster myself, I see what the people tend to click on most... and you know what that is? The stories that are similar to tabloid stories... you all know what I'm talking about. "Olsen Twins on crack", "Jennifer Aniston is pregnant"...

Why isn't there in-depth discussion on important books like the 9/11 report, hard investigating and discussion about Iran or Syria, etc etc.

I understand that those issues may be less interesting to the everyday DU'er but sometimes it becomes a habit to always click on a worthless story just because it is interesting...

I think the media and culture has conditioned us to be less interested in the important news because we see it as boring and be fascinated with worthless stories because they are unique and interesting.

I dunno... again, sorry for the rant.

1. huh?
it's got all the great elements of a great media story - power, sex, salaciousness, possible cover-up. It's a classic.

2. bwhahahaah. yeah, press manipulation and propaganda is "worthless"
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 05:40 PM by thebigidea
nice try, but you can't file this story under Michael Jackson.

bwhahahah.

though do let us know when the Olsen twins are being used as sock puppets for Rove and company to dupe the American people. then perhaps it might interest dems on a political discussion board, hmmm?

the worthless 9/11 report got months of coverage. iran and syria are being squawked about on a daily basis as we prepare for further slaughter... surely you can squeeze a few minutes into that busy schedule to pick away at one of the many unpleasant and disgraceful chapters of der dubya's reign?

especially since we haven't got to the bottom of it yet.

before we get there, there's a certain top we have to make babble like a little baby.

3. I wouldn't clink on any sex stories about
movie stars, but I sure would click on sex stories about hypocritical Repukes. They need to be shown for the hypocritical bastards that they are.

13. me, too
and let's get real -- it was Monica that distracted our President because of all the salacious glee from the other side. Sometimes it's not the big crime which brings one down -- Capone went to jail on tax evasion, not being a mob killer -- Watergate was about an attempted cover up more than a burglary into demo headquarters. Plus, the common person can't get their arms around competing stories of wmd, and what aluminum tubes could be used for, but they know sex and blackmail - that they can understand.

4. I think you're missing the point of this
It seems you are focusing on the tabloid aspect of the Guckert story. This story is much more than just sex or tabloid fodder. This is about someone who may have had a hand in helping someone in the US government commit treason. I'd say that's pretty serious.

However, I'll agree that we have become a nation of tabloid news ingestors (not all but most) and that isn't the fault of most people. The government, IMO, has been conditioning the sheeple all along for this very moment.

This was my main point... I took the Gannon story as an example... and probably a weak example at best although there are many betters stories to choose from.

8. "weak example at best" pretty much sums it up, yeah
So it doesn't interest you to see where this leads?

you don't want to know more about the White House's propaganda and press control operations?

9. It's also about someone with such a dicey past and such cozy
"in's" with some suspiciously high levels within the White House - who BECAUSE OF his dicey past is/was a MAJOR LEAGUE security risk. NATIONAL security risk. Just imagine the blackmail potential with a guy like him, if somebody with connections to our REAL adversaries around the world got cozied up to him...

17. That's a great quote...
I'm a legal transcriptionist -- I type court proceedings verbatim, word-for-word, complete with stammers. I've often thought listening to ** on TV that I would absolutely HATE to be transcribing him. Trying to punctuate him would drive me crazy.

10. I see this as a matter of treason, government control of media, etc.
The sex part is what is making it stick in the minds of the sheeple and will get the MSM on it.

12. Which the MSM is now picking up on it
And the sex part is just a footnote. They are talking about access and propaganda.

14. Funny how that works, isn't it?
I still think the story would never have gotten anywhere if it weren't for the sex. Gay sex in WHPC = public interest, which means media coverage > media (diving to the right to cap on Faux success) will do what it can to avoid embarrassing shithead* and picks up on the propaganda angle.

11. So, why didn't you title your thread "In-depth discussion needed on..."
Instead of "Jeff Gannon... ugh... why?"

Oh, I get it...irony, right?

I knew it!!!!! :spank:

But I'll give it a whack. Du's interest is not in the lewd details other than that they are embarrassing to bushco, and further illustrate the emerging theme of bushco and propaganda. Got it now?

Maybe after you've been on DU a while longer you'll know better than to make wild assumptions.

18. We're not about "getting the most clicks"
And DU hardly needs your guidance on what to discuss.
What is discussed at DU usually is quite important, even though those stories don't get the most clicks.

19. I think the reason Gannon is such a popular topic is because we are tired
of being beaten down by the Repugs and their supreme arrogance.
At least if we got some repreive on the MSM occasionally, we could
almost live with it; however, being baraged on a daily basis with
nothing but lies, deceipt, and utter depravity of the * administration
the Gannon scandal comes like a breath of fresh air.

Everybody loves to see a bully knocked down a peg or two. Most
of my friends are utterly dismayed that someone as evil and
ignorant as * could have been elected by the people of the U.S.
The Gannon scandal is like witnessing the true evildoers beginning
to get their well-deserved comeuppance.

20. get off the crack.
The gannon story does TWO things that help us:

it exposes the fake corporate media as being too GOP friendly, and it makes the bible thumpers dislike the white house.
