A Problem for Liberals
I was just listening to "The Republican Noise Machine" on books on tape. David Brock wrote something that I think has become a problem for liberals. He stated that it seemed that liberalism is a belief only held by old college professors and some people in Hollywood. The Democratic Party must work to show that liberalism is a view that is held by a large amount of people. There is nothing wrong with Hollywood stars and college professors believing in liberalism, but it must be shown that they are not the only ones.

1. Liberalism = Informed World Views
Informed world view = LIBERAL

there is a REASON many educated professors are Liberal.

and i am damned proud to claim one of the "informed" as well.

i frankly don't want a bunch of jingoistic, uninformed people to claim the same.

2. We won't convince the bubba vote ....
with Hollywood starts and college profs. We can win in 08 if those two grops stay silent. It's the biggest favor they could do us.

7. I'm a college professor
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 05:11 PM by smoogatz
And I plan to continue proselytizing to my poor, misinformed (usually just uninformed) conservative students until they're thoroughly corrupted--er, indoctrinated--I mean, until they've seen the light. And neither you nor that asshole Horowitz can stop me.

Mwahahahahahahaha!

3. I'm neither a college prof or Hollywood Star.
I guess David Brock is wrong. Or, maybe not. I consider myself a "liberal", but I'm also a socialist/anarchist.

4. Economic populism
is the winning ticket. The social issues agenda is what destroyed liberalism.

5. Call out the liberals by talking about values
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 05:02 PM by LSparkle
Remind them that true values (of Christianity and other faiths) are the values liberals espouse -- taking care of the less fortunate, a sense of community, less hubris and aggression and more true compassion. There are plenty of liberals out there who don't realize they ARE liberals; the word has been so demonized that they assume it means many things it doesn't. Education is what we need; hopefully Dean is our Pied Piper.

8. The problem with liberalism
I think it's possible people today are all greedy and selfish and may be becoming more and more like that as time goes on. That's a problem for our side.

Maybe Democrats have to add a few more policies that people that don't give a crap about anything but themselves will agree with.

Even selfish assholes probably care about

- our safety from biological attacks and nuclear weapons
- the decline of the economy and value of the dollar
- their retirement

It is hard to think of more examples though.

9. The right
has captured the word and changed the definiton in the minds of Joe and Jo Average.
If I had some advice to Mr. Dean, the first thing I'd do is launch an awareness campaign. I'd have pictures of Thomas Jefferson, to start, and what his accomplishments were, and then the word "Liberal".
I'm not sure any of the Mt. Rushmore presidents would agree with anything happening today........
