Anyone else notice MSNBC's attempt to scare fundamentalist
protestants? The trailer going across the bottom of the screen indicated that John Kerry would allow his ROMAN CATHOLIC beliefs to guide him as president.

So what, you say? I grew up in a Southern Babtist household. Many (not all) fundamentalist protestants are terrified of the Catholic church. Adding the words "Roman Catholic" makes it sound MORE.

Anyone out there know what I am talking about?

1. Unfortunately, yes, I do. I don't have first hand experience
but I've heard a lot of stories that make me stop and scratch my head at Christian against Christian.

I also remember hearing stories when I was a kid, at some of this same garbage swirling around John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

I've also studied about the early anti-Catholic sentiment in the U.S. when the Irish Catholics were emigrating here.

So sad.

2. Yes.
I grew up with lots of cousins, some of whom were Protestant fundamentalists who told us a lot of garbage about how Kennedy would turn the US over to the Vatican, that Catholics are idol worshippers, etc, etc.

The fact that Kennedy did no such thing should dispel any anxiety, but some people would rather be stupidly prejudiced and dwell in ignorance.

3. Being a Northern "Anglo-Catholic" (Episcopalian)
I would NEVER have picked up on this! This would be the same crowd that was worried about JF Kennedy taking orders from the Pope?

4. The reason it jumped out at me is the addition of the word
ROMAN Catholic. Like I said, at one time, there was a LOT of prejudice against the Roman Catholic faith. I don't know about now, because my faith is a personal thing that does not require going to a church to listen to someone tell me how to think, but at one time, this would have been a big deal.

5. Maybe a small number of narrow-minded Protestants
Most, outside of the Bob Jones University crowd, will not be as bigoted. It's more a question of that he has faith, rather than which faith he has.

Apparently, until Kerry started talking about it, a lot of Americans were not even aware that Kerry was Catholic.

9. Funny.....I thought all who recognized the
existence and works of Jesus Christ were Christians. The denominations were secondary.

12. Yep--lots of Southern Baptists
are scared to death of the Catholics. They think they practice witchcraft or something. Unbelievable--aren't we all supposed to worship the same God? Yet, I saw someone post on a non-political board that there was "no way that could Kerry get elected. He's not a Christian and Americans only want to vote for Christians." I pointed out that Kerry was Catholic and the idiot posted back "Like I said, he's NOT a Christian." Unfuckingbelievable!

13. This is pro-Kerry
No fundamentalist protestant is going to vote Kerry anyway. A Catholic who is wavering looks at it and says: he is going to support me - he REALLY is a Catholic. Maybe just a bit of a nudge he/she needs to move to Kerry
