Why Did Bush Hide The Corporate Tax Bill Signing
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 09:09 AM by Jon8503
WASHINGTON (AP) — With no fanfare, President Bush on Friday signed the most sweeping rewrite of corporate tax law in nearly two decades, showering $136 billion in new tax breaks on businesses, farmers and other groups.

President Bush held no ceremony for the signing of the tax-cut bill.
By Ron Edmonds, AP

Intended to end a bitter trade war with Europe, the election-year measure was described by supporters as critically necessary to aid beleaguered manufacturers who have suffered 2.7 million lost jobs over the past four years.

But opponents charged that the tax package had grown into a massive giveaway that will add to the complexity of the tax system and end up rewarding multinational companies that move jobs overseas.

There was no ceremony for the bill-signing. White House press secretary Scott McClellan announced the signing on Air Force One as Bush flew to a campaign appearance in Pennsylvania.

1. He hid it because it proves what Kerry has been saying about Bush
He cares more about special interests than he does about the American people. Plain, simple fact.

I think it was becuase they would be exposed for what they really are.
I hope the wealthy enjoy their little gift. For Now

3. He hid it because he can...with a compliant media
who is more concerned about what happened in Viet Nam 35 years ago than how working people are being SCREWED in the here and now, things like this are possible.

The corporate owned media, which stands to gain by even more corporate tax breaks, will not pound this like they did Kerry bringing up Mary Cheney's name in the last debate that's for sure.

4. Anyone know where to find a copy of this bill?
I did some searching yesterday and all I can find are news articles with a few highlights. I want to see a copy of this bill to read exactly what's in it.

Use this link to the Active Legislation list:
http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/legislative/b_three_sections_with_teasers/active_leg_page.htm

Scroll down the through the charts to the section headed 'Taxes'. This Bill should be listed as Public Law but it isn't.

The two bills are listed beside 'Tax relief, corporate ( Jumpstart Our Business Strength (JOBS) Act; FSC/ETI bill )' .

The Senate bill is S.1637

The House bill is H.R.4520 (This is the bill that was signed yesterday) http://www.congress.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d108:HR04520:@@@D&summ2=m&

Click on a bill.

Scroll down to 'CRS Summary' or 'Text of Legislation'

The controversial provisions are not spelled out like in the articles so you should have news references beside you as you look through the legislation. Hope this helps.

edited to include link to House bill-

7. I agree.
I think they know they're gonna lose. Why else sign this embarrassing bill before the election? They're busily robbing the treasury in the time they have remaining.

Kerry will have a lot of stuff to undo when he gets in office. Hope someone's making a good list.

:dem:

Kerry on!
