Anti-Kerry film producer accused of libel

By DAVID B. CARUSO
Associated Press Writer

PHILADELPHIA — A Vietnam veteran shown in a documentary criticizing Sen. John Kerry's anti-war activities filed a libel lawsuit against the movie's producer Monday, saying the film falsely calls the veteran a fraud and a liar.

Kenneth J. Campbell, now a professor at the University of Delaware, said in the suit that "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal" combines footage of him appearing at a 1971 war protest with narration that claims that many of the supposed veterans who took part in the event were later "discovered as frauds" who "never set foot on the battlefield, or left the comfort of the States, or even served in uniform."

The suit said viewers would be left with the perception that Campbell had lied about his military service.

Campbell attached copies of his military records to the lawsuit, showing that he received a Purple Heart and eight other medals, ribbons and decorations for his service in Vietnam.

Film producer Carlton Sherwood's company, Red White and Blue Productions, did not immediately return a call on Monday seeking comment.

Campbell also threatened legal action against the Sinclair Broadcast Group, an owner of 62 television stations that has announced that it intends to pre-empt regular programming to broadcast "Stolen Honor."

The film explores Kerry's 1971 testimony before the Senate and links him to anti-war activist and actress Jane Fonda. Vietnam prisoners of war claim in the film that his testimony demeaned them and led to prisoners being held longer.

The Democratic National Committee filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission contending that airing the film should be considered an illegal in-kind contribution to the Bush campaign. Kerry's presidential campaign asked that each station carrying the program provide a similar amount of time to Kerry supporters.

Sinclair has contended that the program is news and has invited Kerry to appear on a post-broadcast program. Kerry has declined.

6. sinclair should be exposed for what they are: biased, partisan hacks.
Edited on Mon Oct-18-04 01:43 PM by jdolsen
Every license Sinclair owns should be challenged. Every Viet Nam veteran concerned about the direction this country is taking and the fools steering this country should immediately file suit against Sinclair. Massive boycotts should be started against ALL ADVERTISERS on Sinclair stations. This is one of the first battles in the fight to return the airwaves to the people. This election should prove to anyone in this country with a brain, that to allow one group or interest to control the media in this country is a HUGE MISTAKE. The media outlets whine there should be less regulation, BULLSHIT. There should be more regulation, starting with Clear Channel and Sinclair Broadcasting, which along with Faux, create the Ministry of Propaganda Triumvirate.

7. According to today's NY Times, they don't seem to care
It was on page 1 of the Times daily business section. So far, the owners of Sinclair are immune to all the negativity they are encountering. That makes me think nothing is going to stop them from airing their wretched little piece of trash. They seem to have concluded that if Bush is not re-elected, they're pretty much history, anyway, so they have nothing to lose. You'd like to think the shitstorm this has raised would make it impossible for even a whore like Bush to give them the deregulation they desperately need next year, but with the press's mayfly lifespan of a memory, I wouldn't take that bet.

8. CNN shilling for Sinclair: Repug contributors buy shares now-make
your political voice heard.

Like pay-per-view campaign coverage. CNN says that you get what you pay for--they ought to know.

11. I've emailed every advertiser, national and local
I told them the truth. If they support Sinclair, I will never do business with any of them, again. That goes for my extended family, as well. And I don't just mean on the day of the commercial-free broadcast of this propaganda. If they air that show and those advertisers continue supporting Sinclair, as far as my family's business is concerned, those businesses are toast. :grr: It's not as if there aren't plenty of alternatives.
