I think the Left needs a Karl Rove type operative to survive.
The one thing that's supposed to keep guys like Rove in check has failed us and will continue to fail us. (The Media)

As long as the Media continues to be a pipeline of Rove talking points, the Left will continue play catch up.

I know, I know... this isn't what it supposed to be about... We are and have been a party of fairness and moral ideology. But do you really think that if we don't fight fire with fire, that we'll survive?

1. We don't need Rove, we need
a return to the Fairness Doctrine and legislation to assure that media outlets are owned by many different companies, and not consolodated.

6. Exactly. No more reading from faxes. We need a press that
does some friggin' legwork. Hell, I'd settle for a press that can use Google for chrissakes. How come Josh Marshall can write columns and maintain a fabulous blog while these vacuuous morans can barely follow a lead? Grrrrrrr!! Where's the Tylenol?

2. I agree, but what we need has to be a paladin to Rove's gollum
If we stoop to the particular tricks that Rove has chosen, we will be indistinguishable from that other party. We have to take the high ground, but hold it by force.

3. Why can't we (you, I and others here) be our own Karl Rove?

11. Because DUers are too busy talking about lesbians
which is EXACTLY what Rove wants us to do. If we're not smart enough to realize that, then we're not smart enough to be our own Rove.

5. Certainly, I am torn on this issue.
Ideally, we would like to restore some semblence of justice and fairness to Imperial Amerika. Hell, let's just restore Free America, for all it's faults and flaws while we're at it!

Given that things have deteriorated so badly that may not be possibel, yes, sometimes I wish we were as ruthless, zealous, and ethics-less as the Busheviks.

But that is no real answer. And we both know, given the Totalitarian Zealot's Mentality the Busheviks are now fully innoculated with, resistance will only cause them to up the ante further, as the Nazis, Soviets, and Ferdinand Marcois did.

God knows what "the next level" is to those monsters.

Which will cause the Decline and Fall of Amerika to proceed faster yet still.

So it's a Catch-22, and I have no answers.

But my gut definitely rebels at becoming like the monsters we fight.

9. I wish!. But no, dems are team players with a lot of leader-types

on the teams along with the followers. There are power struggles, but acting cooperatively is deep in our bones, and we resist the Single Great Hero stereotype nowadays. Dems are too skeptical for that, we don't heed authority, we question it.

It handicaps us in the face of a machine like the sheeplike robotic Republicans have. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

14. Rove is the most overrated political operative in history
His big accomplishment is losing a presidential race by 500,000 votes. Everyone talks about this guy like he's the second coming of Lee Atwater. Lee Atwater was a great political man - if morally a very flawed one. Lee Atwater took a fairly stupid, undistinguished candidate with a degenerative brain disease, defeated an incumbent president, and turned the candidate into one of the most revered figures in recent American history.

Karl Rove is nothing but a cheap thug. He hung around for four years on the strength of luck and a complete disregard for decency, just like a million second-rate bag men before him. Karl Rove squeaked by on a lawsuit after losing a race to a sitting vice president who was the sworn enemy of the country's print and broadcast media, then watched as his candidate lost the support of the American people despite a massive terrorist attack and two very popular wars.

In two years, no one will remember this guy. His kind are a dime a dozen in this town. Guys like him - who can't see past the next snap poll - are the last thing the Democratic Party needs.

15. Look... If it wasn't for Rove
Bush wouldn't be anybody. Bush's brain. I agree that he's overrated but you might want to see the movie, Bush's Brain or read this Atlantic piece by Josh Green. He may be overrated in some aspects but he is very dangerous on others...

16. Then we have the same shit happening on the left.
Many people are leaving the right because of the Rove tactics.
If the Left had a KKKarl Rove, there would be no left. It would simple be two RW organizations fighting.
