David Race Bannon - Interpol Assassin

I was cleaning up my links, and came across David Bannons website again, I had read the book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0882822314/002-4298044-3567261?v=glance&n=283155&v=glance">Race Against Evil:The Secret Missions of the Interpol Agent Who Tracked the World's Most Sinister Criminals a couple of years ago.

If you are looking for a introduction into the underbelly of the global slave trade, Bannon offers an interesting perspective, as he was an assassin for Interpol during the 80's and 90's, he comes clean about much of what he knows in the book, and personally experienced during his life basically used to mop up global child porn rings. How child pornography is used to fund terrorism, and terror states (such as North Korea). Other areas such as some of his involvement in the Marc Dutroux case in Belgium, and how he and his boss at Interpol 'cleaned' about 7 more members of the same network that Dutroux was involved in. To being kidnapped and tortured in a North Korean death camp. His involvement in the Landslide case..

Needless to say the book was very interesting and I recommend it.

Beyond that Kung Fu magazine did an interesting article on him, and leave many footnotes as they validate his identity.

Ambassadors know his name. He sits with senators on trade round tables, addresses global corporations at technology conferences4 and publishes on history, computers and translations from two Asian languages. He holds diplomas in computer science and Asian history, and a 3rd degree black belt in hapkido.5 He was a Mormon missionary once. And an ex-con. His friend of nearly 20 years, Lee Hyung-jin6 blandly told us, "Bannon was imprisoned for three months in Taejon Prison.”7 After Bannon was released from prison, Defferre recruited him. "At first, I was really nothing more than a snitch," Bannon says. "Jacques needed someone that spoke Korean and was locked into that particular network, so he used me. It was about as glamorous as puking in an alley."

On a joint assignment, Bannon fell in love with French counter-terrorist agent Sidelle Rimbaud.8 They planned on marriage; she was killed in a firefight with North Korean child smugglers and terrorists in Marseilles. "I was filled with a raw lust for vengeance," he says. "Jacques told me about Archangel. He didn't have to ask twice."

Defferre had been hunting child sex slavers for Interpol since 1978.9 His team was created under Interpol's loosely worded charter, "To establish and develop all institutions likely to contribute effectively to the prevention and suppression of ordinary law crimes”10 to stem the flow of 900,000 child sex slaves smuggled across international borders each year,11 including nearly 10% of the missing kids from the United States.12

"These producers, the ones who buy and sell the children, do it through coercion or kidnapping; then use torture and drugs to force obedience,"Bannon says wearily. "We've witnessed parents selling their infants directly at the doors of the brothels in countries where child prostitution is legal." He cites Thailand and Pakistan. "The resulting pornography could earn billions in profits from an initial investment of about $30-to-50K per child."13 Defferre convinced his superiors that Interpol should match slavers and terrorists for wiliness, adaptability and ruthlessness.14 Archangel's mission: Identify child sex slavers and eliminate them.15...

...Lured from impoverished villages throughout India, Nepal and Bangladesh, young girls are tapped by local recruiters who promise to give them coveted jobs working as domestics or in factories in the big cities. Or they are sold by relatives or neighbors. “If a father has five daughters, he sells two to feed the other three,” says Durga Ghimere, head of ABC Nepal, an agency aiding former sex slaves. Others are duped by brothel procurers who marry them and as many as one hundred other victims. Illiterate and raised to be compliant, these girls have no idea of their fates until they are abandoned in the brothels, but by then it’s too late.

Young girls are auctioned off to the brothels regularly: A pre-teen with light skin goes for as much as $1000; darker-skinned girls sell for $200 to $300. But such sums are recouped by the brothel in a girl’s first few weeks of work. A customer typically pays $45 for a virgin; after her first time, she’ll be turning tricks for one dollar each, with the price dropping to 25 cents in the early hours of the morning, when the customers thin out.

“I was auctioned to the highest bidder when I was 12,” says Yellu. “He became my master, and I had to have sex with him. At 14, he sold me to this brothel. I’ve been here ever since.” It’s where she will stay until she succumbs to tuberculosis, malaria or AIDS. “Seven girls have died from AIDS in this room in the last two years,” she says...

She was like, 'I don't really think that happens. People wouldn't sell their children. People wouldn't let their children be taken from them.' And I didn't know what to say," Bonner recalls. "You don't want to believe that one human can treat another, especially a child, in that way."

Outright denial is a reaction Kolleen sees with unfortunate regularity.

"Child trafficking offends our very notion of human decency," she says. "I certainly don't want to believe in a world where people actually do this to children. Yet, it is true. I believe the more we wake up to this reality and allow our hearts to break, the closer we will be to stopping this horrible crime."
