Jews who leave Israel for good
I know, it's al Jazeera, and Mr. Smallman does not seem to be
an entirely dispassionate observer, but it is a subject of great
interest and there is otherwise diddly squat to be read about it
(although there were a couple others recently.) Some interesting
bits in it too. Lot's of little paragraphs, so only a few excerpted.

My own interest is because I believe this issue is one of the major
strategic drawbacks of Jabbas pro-violence policies.

Every Jewish immigrant that enters Israel is
taking part in a continual referendum on its
chances for survival. But many of the Jews
who enter Israel are also choosing to leave it.

---

But in a presentation at the Association for Israel Studies in Jerusalem, Ian Lustick of Pennsylvania University
has described as much as it is possible to know about emigration - given the lack of official data.

"It is quite likely that the real net immigration of Jews into Israel in 2002 was either near zero or negative," he
said. And as the al-Aqsa Intifda continues, the figures are not likely to change.

---

Evidence for these "missing citizens" is easy to come by. The head
of manpower for the Israel Defence Forces reported in mid-2003
that 34% of Israelis of conscription age were not serving in the
army ? a significant number of whom had "left the country prior
to their recruitment and lived abroad".

1. "the most dangerous place for Jews in the whole world."
In the last month - and with much media fanfare - some 450 Jews decided to leave the safety of North America and France to live in what must be the most dangerous place for Jews in the whole world.

<snip>

A major phenomenon is developing. New arrivals are deciding to leave almost as soon as they arrive. Of the 1000 Jews arriving from North America in 2003, half have now left to go back home.

A very sad statement! Perhaps it is because the Zionist ideal has changed over time, from finding a land for Jews to live in peace to stealing someone else's land in order to fulfill some biblical mythology.

2. 34% of conscription age
That sounds about right, when you consider that religious women marry and don't serve, other women choose national service, and Arabs don't serve at all.

a significant number of whom had "left the country prior
to their recruitment and lived abroad".

The 'significant number' may vary from 0 - 1%.

North Americans have been a very small number in the immigration figures. It is not easy to adjust to living in another culture. The religious immigrants are more likely to make the adjustment.

Immigration TO America is more the direction from all over, not the other way.
