Palestinian Gunman Kills Israeli Settler, Wounds Teenage Girl

A Palestinian gunman broke into a Jewish settlement in the West Bank on Saturday, killing an Israeli man and wounding his teenage daughter. Israeli troops shot and killed the attacker, as soldiers launched raids into other parts of the territory, arresting more than 20 wanted Palestinians.
A Palestinian gunman, armed with an automatic rifle, entered the Jewish settlement of Avnei Hefetz in the West Bank through a hole in the community's security fence.
He approached a house and opened fire at close range through the windows and the door, wounding a teenage girl.
When the girl's father emerged from the house, he was shot dead.
Israeli forces, stationed to protect the settlement close to the West Bank town of Tulkarem, then shot and killed the attacker.
Israeli troops later entered Tulkarem from several directions and surrounded houses where other armed Palestinians were suspected to be hiding.
Palestinian gunmen frequently target isolated Jewish settlements on the Jewish Sabbath, when more residents are at home.

Jewish colonists carry rifles too. And have military training.
Why didn't they fight back? Guess the terrorist was killed too quickly for them to react.

At least the Palestinian terrorists are attacking lawful targets this time. Pity about the girl, although if she is old enough to have military training she's no longer a civilian either.

Eternal war sucks. But hey, they get free land.

3. Let all try to be moderate here

and look at the situation in as clear a light as this muddy topic provides. A man with an automatic weapon goes ANYWHERE and shoots a man and a girl, and I would we hope we would ALL agree that that action is pitiful. Please, if you'd like to make a comment on the justice or lack thereof of settlements existing, I respect that. But to argue that a random Israeli man is a "lawful target" and to wonder why he didn't shoot him back first, is simply unacceptable. I would hope that our blinders have not been put up so high by this situation that we will have come to the point where we endorse the killing of random civillians.

Not a random Israeli man, a militiaman in the Occupied Territories. The article admits he was armed, and rushed out to attack the Palestinian intruder. Israeli society is one of the most militarized in the world, and particularly so in the colonies. The only Geneva Conventions civilians there are the children.

And merely by being there they violate the Geneva Conventions.

"The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies."

I can't disagree with the general thrust of your post, but the distinction between civilians and soldiers is deliberately erased by both Israelis and Palestinians. In this case the Palestinian was abiding by the Conventions (no doubt by accident).

Military training doesn't make you a combat target. Otherwise, by that definition, almost any male over the age of 18 would have been a legit target during the draft years.

There is such a thing as civilians, though you seem unwilling to recognize it.

The child in this attack is 14 years old. No military training is given to 14 year olds. She is definitely a civilian. Neither of the "targets" are lawful. Both victims are civilians and the home is civilian.

Where does the idea of "free land" come in?

The terrorist had been released form prison just days before the attack.
