I doubt the mics on the 6 ships in the "flotilla" were keyed to the captains' DNA. Some of the voices were from one or more captains. Others were from others. Seems like a not unreasonable assumption, and accounts for the variety of voices.

The first video linked in the Blumenthal article is not the 6 minute version or the 30 second version of "Go back to Auschwitz" - in fact, it doesn't have that line in there at all.

You're right. The first video says that the Israeli navy warned the Mavi Marmara away. It's a minute or so out of a longer exchange. It seems to simply be a single, uncompressed except with no editing except for selecting the start and stop times.

The second might overlap with the first. I don't think so. I heard one audio clip that had the same warning repeated several times with slight variations in tempo and wording. In this case, the two videos have the same warning with variation in tempo and wording. Probably different utterances. But unless I had heard the longer version I wouldn't be able to do anything but suspect that the exchange took more than 1:28 or whatever. I'd like to think I'd be careful enough to notice the differences in the phrasing of the warning.

It means, however, that the longer version provides a crucial insight into understanding what we're listening to. One that makes Blumenthal's claims harder to buy. If I were trying to make Blumenthal's case, I'd be sure to try to counter trivially simple objections, and if I was sure I was right dealing with the longer audio would not just be good policy, but buttress my case. Perhaps he just did shoddy work. Perhaps he omitted the longer audio on purpose. Don't know. Neither inspires confidence.

I suspect that the first video was released with one purpose in mind: Israeli did minimal due diligence in warning and communication. The second was released with a different purpose in mind: The progressive, all-tolerant pacificists on board weren't necessarily all nice people. The editing follows the intent, and with different intent you get different editing.

"Editing" does not mean "forgery," of course. That's a different claim and is Blumenthal's. It's also not demonstrated by Blumenthal, since most of his "proofs" have really easy rebuttals, if you take time to think critically about his claims. It might be a true claim. It's just not a substantiated claim.

It's ludicrous -- just as ludicrous as taking all the kitchen knives out of the mess and piling them up and calling them weapons. As ridiculous as claiming those passengers' life jackets were bulletproof vests. As completely fucking stupid as claiming that three of their downed troops were "almost taken hostage" when they were pulled into a hallway and attended by a doctor -- who was shot multiple times in the abdomen for his pains.

The IDF has jumped the shark so utterly, people all over the world will stop saying "jumped the shark" and use "boarded the Marmara" instead.

one thing i've learnt from this whole debacle, is that even though the israelis are extremely murderous, they are simply not very good at what they do.

they lost to hezbollah in lebanon. their destruction of gaza strengthened hamas, the siege has strengthened hamas and they were caught stealing british passports and killing someone in a hotel in lebanon.

they market themselves as extremely sophisticated at what they do. they simply are not!

On another note, to those of us who've supported Israel over the years in the quest for peaceful coexistence- most of the recent actions are so counterproductive that they defy any rational explanation. It's almost as if the Zealots have been resurrected, and anxious to construct another Masada.
