Several thousand people representing dozens of churches and synagogues are expected to attend "A Night to Honor Israel" at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22 at Victory Christian Center, 7777 S. Lewis Ave.The event's purpose is for Christians to speak and act as one voice in support of Israel and the Jewish people, said the Rev. Sharon Daugherty, the pastor of Victory, which has been the host of the event for the past four years.
The keynote speaker again will be the Rev. John Hagee, the Houston megachurch pastor who founded Christians United for Israel, the organization that has sponsored more than 100 "Nights to Honor Israel" across the U.S. since 2006.
Hagee started the movement with the first "Night to Honor Israel" in June 1978 in San Antonio.
David Bernstein of the Jewish Federation of Tulsa said it is becoming increasingly important for Americans to show their support for Israel.
With anti-Semitism on the increase, the growing threat that Iran will become a nuclear power and Israel surrounded by hostile countries that are arming themselves, it is becoming more and more isolated, he said.
The event will begin with a 6:30 p.m. video presentation on Israel and Jewish music and dancing. A full orchestra and choir of 100 from numerous churches will perform.
Michael Oren, the Israeli ambassador to the U.S.; and Asher Yarden, the Israeli consul general in Houston, will send greetings by video."

"Recently, Max Blumenthal uncovered that Elie Wiesel accepted a $500,000 gift from John Hagee, the anti-Semitic pro-settler televangelist. Wiesel appears to have resisted Hagee’s blandishments to come to San Antonio to speak to his congregation as he admits in a video available at the Hagee website. But once Hagee waved that $500,000 check in his face, and after Bernie Madoff had already cleaned him out, Wiesel saw the benefit of making common cause with the Christian Zionist zealot. Wiesel is also a useful tool for Hagee, as the former provides the latter that veneer of Jewish respectability he needs in the face of massive criticism of his motives and his record of strange statements about Jews and the Holocaust.
Thanks to Didi Remez, I’ve been doing some digging among Hagee’s other gifts to Israeli organizations. In fairness, he does give gifts to hospitals and absorption centers, which are perfectly reasonable. But it is notable how much money and how extensively he gives to pro-settler and extreme rightist Israeli groups."
