"Syria will regain every inch of the Golan Heights, a Syrian official said Monday as thousands of people rallied against Israel's occupation in a war-wrecked town at the foot of the plateau.
"Zionist occupiers, leave now," said a protest banner, referring to the Israel Defense Forces troops and Israeli residents who have been on the Golan Heights since it was captured in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Some 17,000 Syrians, mostly of the Druze religion, an offshoot of Islam, live on the Golan today along with 15,000 Israeli residents. Israel annexed the plateau in 1981, but almost all the Arab inhabitants have rejected Israeli citizenship out of loyalty to Syria.

The ruling Baath Party organized a fleet of buses and minibuses to bring people to Quneitra on Monday for a pro-liberation demonstration. The Associated Press estimated the size of the crowd at about 100,000 and said they came from Damascus, the capital, and other cities such as Homs nd Hama in northern Syrian.

April 17, which marks Syria's 1946 independence from France, is the only day of the year that the Syrian government allows its people to enter Quneitra, a destroyed town that the Israelis captured in 1967 and returned to Syria as part of a negotiated
disengagement after the 1973 war. Syria keeps the town, 65 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of Damascus, as a testament to the occupation of the Golan."
