Happy Viewing, Gun Huggers

The August 22/29 issue of "Entertainment Weekly" magazine has a review of the upcoming movie "Runaway Jury," scheduled for release on October 17. Based on John Grisham's best seller, it turns out that the movie has switched villains, from the book's Big Tobacco to....the gun industry. Dustin Hoffman is characterized as playing "the plaintiff's pro-gun-control lawyer," while Gene Hackman is "the nefarious pro-gun jury tamperer."

You RKBA types take heart....it probably won't win nearly as many awards as "Bowling for Columbine" did......

1. A fictional movie based on a fictional book?
You do disservice to "Bowling for Columbine" by bringing it up and implying a comparison. Of course, Columbine's corporate media nay sayers agree with you that both "movies" are "fiction."

I do not have that opinion and like "Bowling for Columbine," and would recommend it to all.

Also, I have noticed this board seems to permit name calling of RKBA DUers, but is quick to delete posts that name call those who would strip US citizens of their 2nd amendment rights.

2. Lighten Up

I've been using the term "Gun Huggers" in a good-natured manner for years in this forum; it's a damned sight nicer than some of the things I've been called by the RKBA side.

So....you're a fan of "BFC" but you're concerned about being stripped of Second Amendment rights? Interesting combination.....

3. And you spout the right-wing radio glibism "lighten-up."
Interesting :P

6. I Don't Think So

The term "lighten up" dates from the early 70's and the dying days of the counterculture, and that's the era and circumstances my usage of the term comes from.

As for your attempt to credit it to right-wing radio---well, I don't think that requires any further comment from me, now does it?

10. Thanks for the nostalgia
But I never discussed the etymology of any phrase. Fortunately, Cheap shots at "gun-huggers" and admonitions to "lighten-up" will never be powerful enough an argument to get the votes needed to change the laws and prohibit gun ownership.

11. You Betcha

A couple of points:

1. Perhaps you're right; your characterizing the term "lighten up" as a "right-wing radio glibism" may not be etymology; maybe all it amounts to is the kind of cheap shot you're complaining about. Feel better?

2. Once more, for what seems about the hundreth time---and with my standard disclaimer that I know it never makes any difference---I have never advocated laws that result in the blanket prohibition of gun ownership, not in this forum or anywhere else. If it makes you feel better to think otherwise, have at it......

I liked the movie because

MOORE'S POINT IS THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE FIREARMS

7. Goodness Gracious, Look At The M.Moore Supporters!
My, my, my. For weeks after "Columbine" was released, J/PS was awash in threads which vilified Michael Moore every whichway, really ugly, frothing-at-the-mouth stuff. Excerpts from far right-wing web sites questioning the supposed accuracy of Moore's documentary, etc. For those of you RKBA guys who remain angry at Moore, I think there's a thread in General Discussion right now that's still nailing him for the same tired old reasons: he's too fat, he's too wealthy, he's too self-promoting, he's too Green, etc., etc., etc. Feel free to wade in.....

Dustin "Rainman" Hoffman portraying the part of the Brady shill.

Charlie: You know what I think Ray? I think this autisticism is a bunch of shit!
Because you can't tell me that you're not in there somewhere!

Raymond: Ammunition. K-Mart sucks!

Oooops, sorry, my bad; wrong dept store. Same Brady shill though.

13. Well, it is not a surprise...
the anti gunners' movement has been so damaged with set backs and losses at the polls and courts, that they have been limited to "victories" in film industry.

What a winning movement

14. That sounds entertaining
But not as amusing as a movie about evil system administrators would be.
