Para-military force teaches gun nuts to kill people

I learned a lot about guns and gun safety at Tuesday night’s Citizens Police Academy, but the biggest lesson I took away was this: I’ll never be an expert marksman.

1. That is a common reaction for anyone starting with the wrong gun.

The best place to start is a .22 handgun. No loud bang; no recoil to speak of. Allows you to concentrate on the fundamentals.

Afterwards you can move up to something bigger. Good marksmanship is just a matter of time and effort, but it is a perishable skill.

The only problem with an experienced gun owner shooting a .22 is that the recoil is so low that it can be a little harder to take seriously. This can cause your accuracy to suffer a little. You just have to concentrate a little more.

I agree that for a beginning shooter a quality .22 revolver or pistol is the best weapon to learn the fundamentals of shooting. It quite possible that by the time you become really proficient with a .22 you will have saved enough money on ammunition to by a larger caliber firearm.

My first handgun was a used Rohm .38 special. When you consider that I had no experience with a handgun and this particular firearm was cheap and poorly made it is no surprise that I had a hard time hitting a target at 25 yards. So I decided to buy a higher quality firearm and purchased a Ruger Blackhawk .357 magnum western style revolver.



While this was a very accurate handgun, I still found my accuracy lacking. So I decided to trade this weapon in on a .22 cal Ruger Mark 1 target pistol.



I learned the basics of shooting with this firearm. It proved to be one of the best investments I ever made. Eventually I bought a number of different handguns in a variety of calibers. I've enjoyed shooting now for 42 years and while I never tried any competitive shooting, many shooters told me I should.

So I agree, "the best place to start is a .22 handgun."
