Congressional ‘gun control’ report telegraphs anti-gunners’ ‘wish list’

On Feb. 3, the Congressional Research Service, the policy and legal analysis branch of the Library of Congress, released a report titled “Gun Control Legislation” by William J. Krouse, Specialist in Domestic Security and Crime Policy.

Here’s what it does:

This report provides basic firearms-related statistics, an overview of federal firearms law, and a summary of legislative action in the 111th Congress and selected legislative action in the 110th Congress that involved issues revisited in the 111th Congress. The report concludes with a discussion of other salient issues that have generated significant congressional interest in the past, including the 1994-2004 LCAFD ban.

Importantly, here is what is under consideration:

Other salient and recurring gun control issues that have generated past congressional interest include (1) screening firearms background check applicants against terrorist watch lists; (2) reforming the regulation of federally licensed gun dealers; (3) requiring background checks for private firearms transfers at gun shows; (4) more-strictly regulating certain firearms previously defined in statute as “semiautomatic assault weapons”; and (5) banning or requiring the registration of certain long-range .50 caliber rifles, which are commonly referred to as “sniper” rifles.

It is, of course, the Brady Campaign wish list (the one for this year), one that's being sold to us by oath-breaking politicians, media cheerleaders, anti-defense special interests and their useful idiot followers as “common sense” and “a good first step.”

1. Well, I'm certainly quaking in my boots. I guess Obama's gonna come and take all the guns after all?

2. Well, point (4) appears to support a ban on the most popular civilian firearms in the United States,

using the usual definitions of "assault weapon" and the baggage (19th century capacity limits) that usually goes with it. On the other hand, this crap didn't come from Obama, who has mostly told his administration to STFU about new gun bans, going back to late 2008/early 2009.

McCarthy's current H.R.308 would affect about ~40 million gun owners and perhaps a quarter-billion lawfully owned magazines, as currently written, and it doesn't even include the ban on rifle handgrips that stick out or adjustable stocks.

8. Looking down, I don't see my boots quaking at the moment either...

but that's because I think Obama is too smart to resurrect a failed 1990's Third Way albatross, particularly one as pointless as a ban on protruding rifle handgrips. Rifles are the least misused of *all* classes of weapons in the United States (accounting for fewer murders than knives, clubs, and even feet/elbows/hands), so I just don't think that the 20+ year old Chicken Little crusade over rifles is going to get any traction.

As to McCarthy's magazine ban, given the numbers involved, it won't pass. It would be nice if the Third Way would consider its albatrosses a little more carefully, though; a nationwide ban on hunting, with a grandfather clause for current hunters only, would affect far fewer people.
