Text Prompts Neighbor To Shoot Attacker Who Tied Up Women

POSTED: 10:07 am EST February 23, 2010

SHELBURN, Ind. -- An attacker who had tied up two women inside a rural western Indiana home was stopped when a neighbor shot him in the leg, police said.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Department said a man broke into the home near the town of Shelburn Sunday morning, tying up a woman and her mother and sexually assaulting the younger woman.

Sgt. William Snead said the older woman was able to send a text message to a neighbor asking for help.

The neighbor's boyfriend, Sonny Osborn, heard the confrontation and went inside with a gun.

Police said Osborn told the attacker to leave before shooting him in the leg three times.

The man was treated at a hospital and was being held in the Sullivan County Jail.

4. This disappoints. That neighbor shouldn't have guns.

Anyone who is that lousy a shot needs to be relieved of all their firearms.

Aim for the head and hit the leg. No good. Bystanders could have been injured.

12. At that moment the man lost his right to live.
It was very generous and merciful of the gun owner to allow the man to keep his life. I don't know if I would.

14. Good on Mr. Osborn!
And kudos to the older lady for having the presence of mind to use a text message to summon help. (I wonder if you can text 911?)

I don't have an issue with the intruder living to stand trial. It's probably easier on Mr. Osborne's emotional state, too.
