Obama Mulls ‘Assault-Vehicle’ Ban to Spur Car Sales
Since the Obama administration’s talk of banning so-called ‘assault weapons’ has resulted in a huge spike in semi-automatic weapon sales nationwide, the White House has recently begun a covert ‘whisper campaign’ suggesting the president might also ban U.S.-manufactured cars and trucks with fully-automatic transmissions, now dubbed ‘assault vehicles’.

President Obama reportedly hopes such chatter will give a much-needed boost to U.S. auto sales.

“These fully-automatics are the weapon-of-choice in the vehicular-manslaughter industry,” said one unnamed White House source. “The automatic transmission allows the killer to accelerate rapidly without the manual process of clutching and shifting gears. Assault vehicles murder roughly four times as many people each year as do firearms. If you include suicides, cars still kill nearly twice as many people compared with all types of guns.”

The administration source also noted that while people with criminal records make up the vast majority of gun-murder victims, ‘assault vehicles’ kill indiscriminately, murdering 39,800 Americans in 2008 alone.

“In most homicide-by-firearm cases, it’s one crook killing another,” said the source. “But automatic transmissions turn law-abiding citizens into killers of other law-abiding citizens, including women, children, seniors and innocent pedestrians.”

Publicly, the administration maintains that it supports an individual’s ‘right to keep and be borne upon wheels’, but the sophisticated whisper campaign is designed both to curry favor with the anti-car lobby, and to boost the economy by driving panic demand for fully automatics.

4. Do you have that on macro, or do you actually type it every time?
You seagull into a thread, drop that load of crap, then fly away.

23. Wasn't it white racists which kept (and keep) blacks from buying guns?

Your "white racist" slur is shop-worn, even to the radical-chics who once used it like a bludgeon on anyone they disagreed with; in fact, the term now identifies its user as intellectually exhausted.

5. yeah, this popped up in my Google search....
the article made me laugh, though, because its damn funny!

If you want to sell something, there isn't much of a better way to move product than a campaign to ban it!

Check out around page 41- the rise in the production of 'assault weapons' right before the california ban in '89 then the federal one in '94.

8. If anything ban manual transmissions
Not because they are a factor in crashes, but because people don't need the added distraction. I don't want to take your cars away from you, but we need common sense regulation. Speed limiters, no manual transmissions, and horsepower limits are just common sense. We need to keep these things on the race track where they belong.

10. I feel that my manual transmission keeps me in tune with what my vehicle is doing
I've been driving stick shifts for over 35 years. I don't spend any time thinking consciously about what gear to be in. My arms and legs take care of it automatically.

14. Your feelings have no right to endanger everyone
Did you know that people with manual transmissions are more likely to die in accidents involving manual transmissions?

You have no need for those features. Despite what you may believe, you are without question being occupied mentally by the process. You can't hold the wheel with two hands, so you are also disabled physically while driving one. Just because you "get off" on driving a manual doesn't mean you can endanger children's lives.

11. I prefer a stick, good power, and no governor, thanks...
...and FWIW, I'm 38, have never had a speeding ticket, and have never been in an accident except for getting tapped in the rear a couple of times.

12. Not willing to make even reasonable regulations
No one wants to take away your car. We just need common sense regulation that respects drivers and protects everyone on the road. You have no need for those features, they only exist to endanger the rest of us.

Why would you stand in the way of common sense regulation that will save lives?

16. LOL...
Here's my dream car...or was, until they discontinued the 6-speed manual T5 here in the USA. You can still get the manual turbo in Europe; I wish they'd at least make it available as an extra-cost option here. Americans, alas, are stuck with slushboxes.

17. Typical Car Worshiper
Refuses to make common sense regulations to make people safer. You should be driving a smart car, automatic transmission, limited to 35 miles per hour, with a BAC tester on the ignition. I guess no number of dead children is enough to overcome your lust for cars.

19. Yup. And you know it's a proven fact that all Volvo owners
own them to compensate for anatomical deficiencies.

No one NEEDS a car that can go 140 mph or that can withstand an impact with a Hummer, and the Volvo's wing shows that the car has no other purpose than to outrun police and run down children...
