US plans separate nuclear command

The US Air Force (USAF) is planning to set up a new
Global Strike Command for its nuclear weapons as part
of a re-organisation after recent mishaps.

The move follows the discovery that six nuclear weapons
were mistakenly flown across the US, and that nuclear
missile fuses were sent unknowingly to Taiwan.

The blunders resulted in the sacking of two of USAF's
most senior officials.

A three-star general will head the new command, part of
a project aimed at shaking up USAF's nuclear mission.

2. I'm suspicious ...

The thing about the right wingers is they take lemons and make lemonade. So when they say they're setting up a new command in response to revelations, I just assume they are creating an organizational unit COMPLETELY filled with right wing nut jobs who will have sole authority over the nation's nuclear arsenal.

4. Global Strike Command vs. Strategic Command
I knew about the two incidents and the actions taken by Secretary Robert Gates against Secretary of the Air Force Michael Wynne and Chairman of the Air Force General T. Michael Moseley. However, it came to me as a surprise that the US Air Force is planning to create a nuclear strike command when a unified strategic command already exists. I feel that it would be less expensive and more efficient (and less provocative) to revise procedures and produce new guide lines to an existing command than to create a new one.
