Thousands left without electricity after botched theft
Eighty thousand people were left without electricity after an attempt to pillage a power network was bungled, highlighting how "rampant" theft is worsening China's already acute energy shortage, state media said yesterday.
The botched job took place Monday in Huayin city, northwestern Shaanxi Province, as unidentified perpetrators tried to steal high-tension wire, the China Daily said.

One of the wires, apparently severed to be sold as scrap metal, fell onto a highway underneath and was caught on a passing truck, pulling down seven steel towers, the newspaper said.
