LAWRENCE - On the roof of the century-old mill building that houses his riverfront Italian restaurant and pizzeria, Sal Lupoli sets lofty goals for February: cutting his $120,000-a-month electric bill by a quarter and filling 20,000 square feet of space with new businesses.

The giant 121-kilowatt, 392-panel solar energy system that is expected to go on line before February will help him reach both goals, he says. Cheaper solar power will help lure another five to seven new companies to some of the most attractive and least expensive mill spaces in eastern Massachusetts, according to Lupoli.

But that isn't the most exciting things he sees happening by next spring at Riverwalk Properties, a five-building complex between Merrimack Street and the Merrimack River.

"The Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union is really the anchor of things taking place over here," said Lupoli, pointing toward the building with the twin smokestacks where the credit union plans to relocate its corporate headquarters.

Raytheon Company to Build Solar Array in Andover

http://www.solarbuzz.com/News/NewsNAPR717.htm

The Massachusetts Renewable Energy Purchasers (MREP) program announced today that Raytheon Company, a program participant, has received funding for a solar electricity system for its Integrated Air Defense Center in Andover, Massachusetts. This installation will harness energy from the sun to generate electricity at the site.

The 98 kilowatt photovoltaic system will be constructed by SunEdison, LLC beginning in early 2007. The system will produce approximately 111,000 kWh of electricity annually.

“With this impressive commitment to renewable energy from a clean solar source, Raytheon Company will help contribute immensely to cleaner air and help reduce our nation’s dependence on fossil fuels,” said Dr. Jan Hamrin, president of the Center for Resource Solutions.

Raytheon Company is an award recipient of a Massachusetts Technology Collaborative design and construction grant. The company will match grant award funds to build the system, and, with the grant funding, the project will pay for itself in approximately five years. Raytheon is one of 19 recipients of grant awards designed to foster growth in the renewable energy market in Massachusetts.
