A bipartisan group of 30 state lawmakers, most from North Texas, sent a letter to Gov. Rick Perry on Monday asking him to fast-track legislation to fund more air monitors in the area.
The legislation would give the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality the funding to install 20 more air monitors in the Barnett Shale region. Each monitor costs about $250,000 the first year, and $100,000 for every year after that.
"The data collected by the proposed air monitors in the North Texas region will help ensure our citizens are healthy and that Texas' business climate remains vibrant and strong," the letter reads.
When the governor designates an issue as an "emergency" at the Capitol, the Legislature can start considering bills related to it in the first month of the session, pushing it ahead of most other issues. Perry has already designated a few emergency items this session, including a voter ID bill.
