A pack of gray wolves in Wallowa County expanded this spring, with the addition of at least four pups. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife captured the animals on a trail camera July 3 as they scampered up a field in the Imnaha Wildlife Management Unit east of Joseph.
Wolf pups are born in mid-April, with litters averaging four to six pups. ODFW officials said they usually venture outside their den in June. The camera also captured images of six adult wolves, including an alpha female who ventured into Oregon from Idaho in January 2008. Wildlife officials have tracked 10 wolves in the Imnaha pack before the pups were seen.
Four other wolves have been sighted elsewhere in Wallowa County.
In early June, following the killing of livestock by wolves, ODFW authorized the killing of two wolves. Conservation groups fighting for the preservation of the endangered species took their opposition to federal court, challenging the kill permits. A judge has blocked the shooting of the wolves until at least the end of the month.
