he thinks the lack of data at the north pole means there's no ice there

I mean that 4 days ago all those slushy areas on the north coasts were solid.

Clearly you don't spend much time around here. :P

26. Look at the same month from last year.
As far as I know, this happens. I don't know if this shows it to a greater or lesser degree, but that's one place the ice is normal for weakening.

which is what one would expect if the ice was very thin.

7. That's what I was wondering - Scandinavia, as noted above, not so worrying . . .
Not just ice-free conditions in much of the Chuckchi and Beaufort sectors, but lots of weakness well to the north.

9. Within the last 4 days
huge weak chunks have opened up.

Recall, also, that the area north of Baffin Island and Greenland is traditionally where the older sea ice congregates.

Here are the images from a few days ago:

6. More ice than last summer? Here's a little more about that, and the source:
Source: http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/

If anything, it looks like a little more ice than we'd expect in June.

You can see in this image how it's been diminishing over time, most recent lower left is 2005, don't compare to the June 8, 2010 pic in OP as these are all Sept images.

21. Hudson Bay was the same color as that big green patch just 5 short days ago.
I wonder if the collapse can be expected to be that quick. It is almost certain at this point, that it will collapse to some significant extent, but the whole swath in 5 days would be freaking insane. Going to keep a sharp eye out on this one...

25. Canadian Ice Services
Seems like CIS were overly optimistic about the melt this year.

http://ice-glaces.ec.gc.ca/prods/FECN15CWIS/20100616000000_FECN15CWIS_0005034265.txt

I also read earlier this week but can't find the reference that most ice experts don't believe we'll surpass the loss from 2007. I'm pretty sure we will given the state of the melt so far.

36. Here's the cap:
http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/subsets/?mosaic=Arctic.2010193.aqua.2km

Looks to me like the whole cap is MASSIVELY unstable. Large cracked areas all over the place.

This may not translate well into imagery based on percent open water, though.

41. What is going on with Cryosphere Today and NSIDC?
Cryosphere's sea ice image (http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/) has been stuck on 07 Jul and their Current Northern Hemisphere sea ice has dropped from a deficit of 1.6 million sq km to 1.33 msk since then. If you go to the NSIDC website (http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/), their sea ice extent has also flatlined for the last week. Is there a data lock somewhere or has the ice stabilized in the last week?
