1. you can buy diesel generators.
I don't know if you can run them directly on used oil, but could run them on biodiesel.

4. Thanks. I deleted because I found some information on Google, and good
news they are building a biofuel station in my home town. I sent for their newsletter and will post on it when I get some information. It seems like its time has come.

7. You shold have left it up.
As I regularly tell my students, "The only dumb question is the one that goes unasked." People buy generators all the time without thinking about fuel, and your question may nudge a few people toward thinking about it a bit more.

8. I'm going to put another one up perhaps this weekend with more information.
I don't have much time now to do a post that makes sense, because the job calls, but I'm turning up some interesting research on the subject.

3. Sure.
Most small generators are gas, but there are a number of diesel generators on the market that would work. You could change out the glow plugs and injectors and run straight vegetable oil, but converting it to homemade biodiesel is a better idea (easier maintenance, better functionality in cold weather, easier starting, etc). You can make biodiesel from vegetable oil in your garage. Homemade biodiesel isn't practical for a car that you're driving every day (it would be cheaper to buy it), but it's fine for a more limited-use scenario like a generator.
