U.S. turns to Sweden as model in nuclear waste storage

"If the United States is at a loss over what to do about nuclear waste, it may be time to check out the Swedish model.

A symposium at the annual meeting of the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science in San Diego last week highlighted the Swedish power industry in gaining public support for a geological repository for high-level radioactive waste.

The Scandinavian success comes in stark contrast to efforts in the U.S., where spent nuclear fuel rods have remained for decades in temporary storage at power plants around the country. Meanwhile, Congress has debated where to bury them, decided on a repository under Yucca Mountain in Nevada, and then changed its mind."

1. We should turn to Sweden as a model for a social safety net as well
including health care.

3. So you think we should just turn it over to the nuclear industry?
Edited on Mon Feb-22-10 01:24 PM by kristopher
Well it has worked so well in every other area of US culture, I'm sure we'd be just as happy with the outcome of this approach as we have been with leaving it to the bankers in the financial sector, leaving it to the insurance industry and the AMA for health care, and leaving it to the natural gas industry for fracking....

We've already removed oversight from the nuclear industry while building the plants, lets just go whole hog and let them find the solution for disposal. US corporations are so damned good at long term planning after all.

4. Y'know, the US was doing a Crystalline Rock Repository study a few decades ago. Congress
shut it down back when "Let's Just Stick It to Nevada!" became the thought-of-the-day
