Scratch those new Ontario reactor plans

Source: Toronto Star

Bruce Power has abandoned its grand vision of building new reactors in Nanticoke and at its existing site near Kincardine, another sign that the nuclear "renaissance" is not emerging as planned.

<snip>

He said the focus now will be to investigate how feasible it is to refurbish reactor units 3 and 4 at its Bruce A facility and units 5 to 8 at its Bruce B plant.

The Tiverton, Ont.-based company is in the process of restarting units 1 and 2, an effort that is hundreds of millions of dollars over budget and a year behind schedule. Those units are expected to go into service in 2010, adding an additional 1,500 megawatts to the grid.

<snip>

But Shawn-Patrick Stensil, a nuclear energy analyst at Greenpeace, said it's becoming clear that the promise of affordable next-generation nuclear power is not coming true. "Nuclear reactor projects are falling like dominoes," he said.

1. Greenpeace "nuclear analyst?"
That kind of reminds me of the time that Eichmann learned Yiddish...

There is no such thing as a "nuclear analyst" at Greenpeace, any more than there is NOT ONE person at Greenpeace who gives a rat's ass about dangerous natural gas waste, dangerous coal waste, dangerous oil waste, or dangerous natural gas and dangerous oil terrorism (Oklahoma City) or dangerous fossil fuel war.

You cannot get into Greenpeace if you know any science whatsoever, since Greenpeace is an organization where people will do anything for the environment http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/naked-glacier-tunick-08182007">including driving in a dangerous fossil fuel powered vehicle to get naked on a glacier except open a science book.

Ontario gets more than 50% of its electricity from nuclear power.

http://windconcernsontario.wordpress.com/2009/07/20/nuclear-and-wind-on-the-ontario-electricity-grid/

Thus if Ontario cannot do what it has done before, there is something wrong with the picture, and it probably involves either a generation which is dumber and less educated than its predecessor - or it involves dumb gas and coal funded anti-nuke fundies acting like arsonists complaining about fires.

I basically suspect the latter, and note with due contempt that former anti-nuke German government officials, including the former chancellor of Germany who is paid 300,000 Euros per year by Putin's Gazprom, and the so called "Green" Party leader and government official Joshka Fisher all work for and are highly paid by, like the disgusting American anti-nuke Amory Lovins, dangerous fossil fuel companies.

There are no "dangerous fossil fuel analysts" at Greenpeace because Greenpeace couldn't care less about how many people die from fundementalist anti-nukism in the next two hours, never mind in the next 100 years. The Greenpeace policy toward dangerous fossil fuels is to dump responsibility on generations whose grandparents have not even been conceived yet:

http://www.greenbiz.com/news/2008/10/31/report-zero-carbon-global-economy-possible-2090

There is NOT ONE dumb fundie anti-nuke who recognizes that climate change is not something that will become a problem in 2090, but is a problem NOW! NOW!!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. Who got it right: Amory Lovins, Al Gore, Joe Romm, James Hansen, UCS, Greenpeace, etc.
Who got it wrong: Bush, Cheney, Republicans, and other pro-nukes who can't do math.

3. Greenpeace gets it right on nuclear
Letters to the Editor:
http://www.thepeterboroughexaminer.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=1670904">Greenpeace gets it right on nuclear

Re "News flash: Greenpeace is antinuclear" (Letter,July 23) -

Don Carmichael needs to get his facts straight before criticizing Greenpeace. To say that Greenpeace "is the last environmental group that should be chosen to comment on this issue" is typical of the ignorance around the nuclear power question. In fact, the opposite just might be closer to the truth.

Last year, Greenpeace released a report which included analyses from top level investment houses. They concluded that the actual cost of the Darlington expansion would be up to double the estimates stated by the Ontario government. When the bids for the project came in this spring, they matched the higher numbers reported by, yes, Greenpeace. Since then, the government has delayed moving forward on Darlington because of the high price tag. Bruce Power just pulled out of building new nuclear plants at Bruce and Nanticoke, again because of costs. Sorry, Mr. Carmichael, Greenpeace was right.

To find untrustworthy sources of information, I suggest Mr. Carmichael look to where the money lies around efforts to resurrect Ontario's nuclear power system. As is the case in most other breaches of trust, follow the money.

The objectives and values of Greenpeace are the same as a multitude of other groups; concern for the environment, the future of humanity, social equity, and the responsible management of public funds. These are the motivations of Greenpeace. If Mr. Carmichael chooses to criticize such groups, then these values are also being criticized. It is symptomatic of society's problems when ignorance on this level is practised and expressed. Unfortunately for Mr. Carmichael, this is very revealing on a number of levels.
