David Attenborough documentary on wolves
Just finished watching a PBS documentary on wild wolves (which I recommend, incidentally, for anyone who is looking for something to watch this eveing) and Attenborough described how, in Canada, people take their families on pilgrimages to the parks where wolves live, for the express purpose of listening to the wolves' noctural concert of howls. The park rangers start off with a few howls of their own to get the concert going and, within minutes, the night sky is filled with the chorusses of wolves. And people are bringing their kids to hear this and the kids' faces are lighting up with delight at this amazing opportunity. This happens there evidentally every night, and long lines of cars wait to get into the park to experience this miracle.

As I was watching this, I couldn't help but contrast this to what we in this country do with wolves, i.e., saddle up in our helcopter gunships and machine gun them from the air. What the fuck is wrong with this country that our first instinct when we encounter the miraculous beauty of nature is invariably to destroy it? Other people in other countries aren't like this, why are we?

1. What's it called?
I didn't see anything that fits the description on the PBS schedule for tonight. What's the name of the documentary?

2. Oops, sorry, forgot that part
It's listed in my TV guide as "David Attenborough Special: Wolf - the Legendary Outlaw."

Arming America

You knew that the lean, mean librarian machine would have something for you, didn't you?

4. Do something about it!
Like Dr. Dean says, the power to change this country rests with you. Find a local festival, like Earth Day or such. Reserve a table, get some literature and posters from the wolf conservation societies (or write your own). Put their furry faces up and your table will attract people. Even better is to get a real, live animal for your table.

Tell the visitors what you know about the issue of shooting wolves in Alaska. Your passion and your knowledge is something that no one else can contribute quite like you. Have the passers-by sign a petition to the Alaska government and another to your reps saying this stinks. Then the passers by will be inspired and take this lesson home with them and tell others.

On second thought, a live wolf at your booth might not be doable.
